Abstract:
A method and apparatus for mitigating effects of multipath fading, interference, and noise in a single sideband (SSB) signal transmitted by a radio communication system and demodulated by a portable subscriber unit (122) utilizing a demodulator (304) compensated by a pilot signal power (406). The apparatus performs the mitigation process by calculating (708) a pilot fading threshold in addition to a muting threshold. When samples of the mean pilot signal power fall below the fading threshold, the compensation of the demodulated signal is adjusted (714). In addition, when the mean analog message signal power falls below the muting threshold, the samples included in the predetermined portion of the message are muted (718).
Abstract:
A method of registration of a portable unit that may be utilized in a communication system that comprises a network controller, having a data base for storing portable identification numbers, a base station, and a portable unit, wherein a subscriber communicates to the network controller a first information set which comprises subscriber qualifying information, the portable identification number, and a key code that has been entered into the portable (100), and wherein the subscriber has entered a link identification number for over-the-air registration into a memory within the portable unit (102).
Abstract:
A method and apparatus is used for transmitting an outbound message in a two-way messaging system having a plurality of cells employing frequency reuse. The outbound message is transmitted to a selective call transceiver (122) utilizing a first frequency reuse plan (312). The two-way messaging system awaits a positive acknowledgment (316, 318) from the selective call transceiver (122) confirming that the outbound message was received with an acceptable quality. The two-way messaging system retransmits the outbound message to the selective call transceiver (122) utilizing a second frequency reuse plan (332), in response to receiving a negative acknowledgment and also in response to failing to receive any acknowledgment within a predetermined time after transmitting the outbound message.
Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
A communication system is designed that reduces co-channel interference when heterogeneous users are sharing spectrum. The system design enables a plurality of pairs of users to communicate their channel utilization time periods by using the durations and start or stop times of certain transmissions to signal the start times and durations of later transmissions. Other system users using possibly different communications protocols and different modulation technologies can measure the durations of received transmissions and to infer channel usage based on these durations.
Abstract:
A non-real time messaging system (200) for targeting messages to a subscriber unit (222) comprises a synchronized profile of where a subscriber unit should be located (a predetermined base transmission area for transmission of messages to the subscriber unit) maintained between a controller (212) and the subscriber unit. The subscriber unit detects when the subscriber unit is not within the receiving range of a predetermined base transmission area, informs the controller and the controller directs subsequent transmissions to an area identified by the subscriber unit and otherwise transmits subsequent messages to the predetermined base transmission area. The system further includes a plurality of base receivers (217) coupled to the controller for receiving transmissions from the subscriber units and allowing the controller to detect when the subscriber unit is not within the receiving range of a predetermined base transmission area.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus of processing an inbound call to a pager equipped cordless communication device (116) having a device identification number and a pager identification number is provided. The method comprises the steps of receiving the inbound communication via a switching station (130) and paging (412) the wireless communication device (116) via a paging station (114). Upon such a page, the communication device (116) links to a telepoint base station (108) which then contacts the switching station (104). The switching station (104) subsequently links the inbound call with the call back from the communication device (116).
