Abstract:
In a method for the prevention and/or treatment of skin damage, particularly inflammation and aging, a composition containing lipoic acid and/or a lipoic acid derivative is topically applied to affected skin areas. A fat-soluble fatty acid ester of ascorbic acid such as palmityl ascorbate and/or tocotrienol is preferably applied with the lipoic acid or derivative in association with a dermatologically acceptable carrier.
Abstract:
System and device (200) for, and method of, communicating according to a trellis code (300) of baseband signals chosen from a fixed set of baseband signal points. A first set of signal points define a first subconstellation, and a second set of signal points define a second subconstellation. The first subconstellation is characterized with a different minimum distance between adjacent signal points than the minimum distance for the second subconstellation. Under a PCM modem arrangement (200) the first and second constellations respectively include set of signal points selected from the PSTN quantization rules, and the first subconstellation has a smaller minimum distance than the second.
Abstract:
In laying out electronic devices on a substrate the routing of nets is important in minimizing conductor area and improving performance. A method for routing of nets in an electronic device which has a plurality of clusters is disclosed which separates the intra cluster routing and the channel routing between the clusters. For the intra cluster routing a topological graph is proposed to be used for mapping a subgraph which is representative of the nodes in a net belonging to a cluster to be routed.
Abstract:
A method and system for generating an ignition coil output signal to control charging and discharging of a plurality of ignition coils (36) in an internal combustion engine. A plurality of holding registers (42) asynchronously receive a plurality of ignition coil data from a processor. The plurality of holding registers are memory-mapped and store the plurality of ignition coil data until subsequent ignition coil data is received from the processor. A sensor (37) is provided for determining a position of the engine and generating a corresponding engine signal. A plurality of match registers (46) are coupled to the plurality of holding registers (42) for comparing the ignition coil data with a reference signal and generating an ignition coil output signal for receipt by one of the plurality of ignition coils based on the engine signal and the comparison between the ignition coil data and the reference signal.
Abstract:
A broadcast for interactive viewing by a plurality of viewers is provided by contemporaneously capturing (10) a plurality of wide-angle image sequences from a plurality of viewpoints. The viewpoints are selected from the group consisting of a space viewpoint, a terrestrial viewpoint, and an undersea viewpoint. The wide-angle image sequences are broadcasted (12) to the viewers. Each of the viewers receives at least one of the wide-angle image sequences, and selects a portion of the at least one of the wide-angle image sequences. A perspective corrected view of the portion is displayed for view by the viewer. Optionally, prestored textual data and a perspective corrected view of a prestored image may also be displayed.
Abstract:
A method is provided for autonomous radio talk group configuration among radio transceivers. The radio transceivers are placed in a group configuration mode that operates on a communication channel (310, 320). A configuration master transceiver is selected and the other transceivers designated as configuration slave transceivers (330). The configuration master transceiver transmits radio talk group identification information on the communication channel, and the configuration slave transceivers receive and store this radio talk group identification information for use in radio talk group communications (340).
Abstract:
A PCMCIA card having independent functionality and alternatively arranged to operate in conjunction with a host computer, that includes a peripheral apparatus (109) having an integral CPU (125), a power source (129), and a power supply (127) for exhibiting an independent operating state; and an interface function (121) integral with and coupled to said peripheral apparatus (109), said interface function arranged and constructed to couple said peripheral apparatus to the host computer (101) over a PCMCIA compliant interface and initiate a dependent operating state at said peripheral apparatus (109).
Abstract:
A remote meter reading system (10) includes a group of meter interface units in which each meter interface unit (12) operates between periods of activity and inactivity. The plurality of meter interface units (12) are assigned to groups, each of the meter groups having a sleep rate assigned. Upon reading each of the meter interface units (12), the sleep rate assigned to the meter interface units (12) in each of the groups is advanced to the next group's sleep rate. This process is cycled through all of the meter groups in the system in order for all of the meter interface units to have approximately the same amount of overall battery savings.
Abstract:
A rechargeable battery (208) is charged using a charger (202). The charge current provided by charger (202) is a stepped-down pulse where the battery charge current rate change is determined by the rise time of the battery voltage. The charge pulse sequence is repeated after the polarization recovery period is completed. The polarization recovery time of the previous period will determine if the stepped-down pulse has to be modified.
Abstract:
A system, and a corresponding method, for measuring a chemical concentration of a gas exhausted from exhaust ports (409, 413) of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine (401) includes a gas sensing device. This device (419) is preferably a UEGO (Universal Exhaust Gas Oxygen) sensor. The gas exhausted is present in a substantially stable chemical concentration (706, 718) at a collection point (420) during intervals (738, 742) of engine angular rotation corresponding to the exhaust cycles. The UEGO sensor (419) measures the gas exhausted from the exhaust ports (409, 413) and provides a sensory output signal (743) that, during the intervals (738, 742) of engine angular rotation corresponding to each of the exhaust cycles, approaches (737, 741) a substantially stable value representative of the chemical concentration of the gas (706, 718) exhausted during the associated exhaust cycle. The sensory output signal (743) is coupled to an engine control system (431) that is executing signal reconstruction method steps (500, 600). These signal reconstruction steps (500, 600) are preferably based on a Kalman-Bucy state estimator in which a constituent gas signal P?oe? (745) that has a substantially constant amplitude during the intervals (738, 742), is reconstructed by the Kalman-Bucy state estimation reconstruction process (500, 600). The described improved method, and system, can compensate for the static and dynamic temporal and spacial effects, characteristic of the multi-cylinder engine exhaust system and the difference in sensory response to rich and lean exhaust gases, of the UEGO (419) sensor.
