[PLOBLEM] Even when data with a hierarchical data structure is displayed, it can be identified which hierarchy's data a manipulation instruction by a touch operation performed on a touch panel directs to, and thereby a predetermined function can be executed. [SOLVING MEANS] A portable terminal device comprising a touch panel on a display screen is provided with a press operation detection unit for detecting a press operation performed on a predetermined region of the display screen, a sweep operation detecting unit for detecting a sweep operation performed on another region of the display screen, and a terminal data processing unit for identifying the hierarchy of data to be manipulated on the basis of the presence or absence of the press operation detected by the press operation detecting unit and executing processing for the data of the identified hierarchy on the basis of the contents of the sweep operation detected by the sweep operation detecting unit.

An information terminal apparatus is provided which presents an operation menu according to a target apparatus just by photographing the target apparatus by a built-in camera, thereby intuitively executing operation appropriate for the target apparatus. The information terminal apparatus includes a target recognition unit which recognizes a target apparatus from an image taken by photographing the apparatus by the built-in camera, a menu management unit which presents operation menu information preserved in advance according to the target apparatus based on a recognition result obtained by the target recognition unit, and a processing unit which gives an operation instruction according to operation contents selected based on the operation menu information.

A fingerprint authentication device comprises input finger characteristic judging portion 13. The input finger characteristic judging portion 13 judges whether the input data is proper or not on the basis of spatial frequency analysis of an fingerprint image represented by the input data. An observation area deciding portion decides an observation area on the fingerprint image. A frequency analyzing portion 132 transforms image of the observation area into a Fourier transformed image. The frequency analyzing portion 132 further calculates averages and dispersion of strength values corresponding to predetermined spatial frequency bands. A discriminative value calculating portion calculates discriminative values by the use of the averages and the dispersion . A deciding portion decides whether the input image is proper or not by the use of the discriminative values together with discriminative coefficient preliminary calculated.

A biometric identification system ensuring reliable and protective identification of individuals even in a system having a biometric input device and a biometric verifier are separately provided is disclosed. The biometric data input device has a biometric data sensor and an encoder that encodes digital biometric data using secret information identifying the biometric data input device to transmit encoded data to the biometric verifier. The biometric verifier decodes the encoded data using the secret information to reproduce digital biometric data. The identity of the individual is verified when the digital biometric data is a registered biometric feature of an authorized user and the biometric data input device is an authorized device.

A fingerprint characteristic extraction apparatus uses, in addition to characteristic amounts used in ordinary preselection processing, a novel characteristic amount obtained from a fingerprint image for the preselection processing. The fingerprint characteristic extraction apparatus includes a ridge extraction section (12) for extracting ridges from an inputted fingerprint image, a singular point detection section (13) for detecting singular points from the ridges, a main pattern discrimination section (14) for discriminating a pattern from the ridges and the singular points, and a singular point characteristic calculation section (15) for detecting characteristic amounts between the singular points from the ridges, the singular points and the pattern. The fingerprint characteristic extraction apparatus further includes a joint line extraction section (11) for extracting a joint line from the inputted fingerprint image, and a joint line characteristic calculation section (16) for calculating joint line singular point characteristic amounts from the joint lines, the ridges and the singular points.

When necessary fingerprint inputting is performed from a new-fingerprint-inputting section (21), substitute authentication by a substitute authentication section (22) is permitted. An authentication method using biometrics identification, comprising the following steps of: identifying a user by biometrics entered from a portable authentication terminal; when the user has been registered previously, establishing communication between the authentication terminal and an authentication executing device independent of the authentication terminal, and calculating a common secret key for use in transmission of an authentication message; encrypting an authentication message including the user's inherent information in the authentication terminal based on the secret key; sending the encrypted authentication message from the authentication terminal to the authentication executing device; and decrypting the authentication message in the authentication executing device based on the calculated secret key, thereby executing an operation depending on the user. inherent information included in the message.
