Hair which is not constrained is treated with a composition comprising a thiol, which, under the conditions of treatment has at least as strong a reducing action as a composition comprising glycerol thioglycolate at the same molar concentration in the cold, capable of reducing -S-S- bonds in the keratin of the hair, and immediately thereafter rinsing the hair without constraining it to improve its ability to be satisfactorily subsequently set. The reducing agent may be thioglycolic acid, thiolactic acid, thioglycerol, thioglycolic amide or glycerol thioglycolate and the treating composition may also contain swelling agents, e.g. urea, sequestrating agents, e.g. ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, bases, e.g. ammonia, monoethanolamine or morpholine, buffers, e.g. ammonium bicarbonate, to maintain a pH of 5-10, dyestuffs and perfumes. The hair may be washed, contacted with the reducing composition for 5-20 minutes, rinsed, optionally treated with a neutralising agent, e.g. an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide or an alkali metal bromate, or with a catalyst, e.g. manganese sulphate or a glycol dimethacrylate, which promotes the reconstitution of the reduced -S-S- bonds in the keratin, and subsequently set using water or an aqueous solution comprising a cosmetic resin, e.g. polyvinylpyrrolidone or a vinyl pyrrolidene vinyl acetate copolymer. Alternatively the catalyst may be added to the reducing composition or to the hair-setting solution. The treating compositions may be in the form of a solution, fluid cream, gel or aerosol. The use of a basic composition comprising a mixture of at least one thiol and at least one disulphide of a thiol, the mole ratio of disulphide to thiol being at least 1.5:1 is disclaimed.
