Abstract: Communication cables are provided in which a core lay length of the cable varies along the cable length. The cable may be provided with different segments that have different core lay lengths. It is desirable for neighboring core lay lengths in a cable to differ by a factor of two, to enable a reduction in power-sun alien near-end crosstalk (PSANEXT) when two cables are installed alongside one another. Segments of the cable having different core lay lengths may be spaced periodically along the length of the cable, and the periodicity of the spacing may be altered by a jitter distance. The introduction of jitter into the periodicity of the spacing of the segments increases the likelihood that a beneficial placement of core lay lengths will occur when two or more cables are installed alongside one another.

Abstract: An electrical connector with improved crosstalk compensation is disclosed. By including at least one coupling with a different frequency dependency than other couplings in the connector, crosstalk compensation performance is improved over a greater frequency range. The different frequency dependency may, for example, be used to compensate for phase shifts caused by distances between compensation circuitry and the plug/jack interface. Embodiments for decreasing these distances are also disclosed.

Abstract: Detecting and monitoring voltage for power quality or safety applications requires isolation between the primary voltage and the voltage detection circuitry. This isolation is required for two purposes: a) To protect the detection circuitry (powered by a source independent of the primary line voltage at less than 50V, and considered non-hazardous), and b) To prevent any possibility of the primary line voltage (typically greater than 50V) from reaching personnel. There are a variety of isolation methods that one can employ for this that include optical, thermal, magnetic field and electric field techniques. This record sketch describes these various techniques and also describes methods to validate the subsequent result generated from each isolation technique to ensure that the result and any subsequent indication is accurate.

Abstract: In one embodiment, the present invention is a communication connector, comprising a compensation circuit for providing a compensating signal to approximately cancel an offending signal over a range of frequency, the compensation circuit including a capacitive coupling with a first magnitude growing at a first rate over the range of frequency and a mutual inductive coupling with a second magnitude growing at a second rate over the range of frequency, the second rate being greater than the first rate (e.g., the second rate approximately double the first rate).

Abstract: Alien crosstalk in communication channels is decreased with the use of crosstalk- mitigating materials. Electrical communication cables may be provided with crosstalk-mitigating materials that surround twisted pairs in the cables. According to one embodiment, the crosstalk- mitigating material is an electrically resistive material having electrically conductive areas placed thereon. Such a material mitigates the effects of electrical and magnetic fields that would normally lead to alien crosstalk between communication channels.
