Abstract: A carrier recovery method and apparatus using multiple stages of carrier frequency recovery are disclosed. A receiver uses multiple frequency generation sources to generate carrier signals used to downconvert a received signal. An analog frequency reference having a wide frequency range and coarse frequency resolution is used in conjunction with a digital frequency reference having a narrow frequency range and fine frequency resolution. The multiple carrier signals are multiplied by a received signal to effect a multi-stage downconversion, resulting in a baseband signal. A frequency tracking module measures the residual frequency error present in the baseband signal. The measured residual frequency error is then used to adjust the frequencies of the carrier signals generated by the multiple frequency generation sources.

Abstract: Techniques for detecting and mitigating adjacent channel interference (ACI) in a wireless (e.g., CDMA) communication system. In one aspect, ACI may be determined by signaling or detected by filtering a pre-processed signal in each frequency range where ACI may be present (e.g., with a respective bandpass filter), estimating the energy of the filtered signal for each frequency range, comparing the estimated energy against an ACI threshold, an d indicating the presence or absence of ACI at each frequency range based on t he result of the comparison. In another aspect, a selectable filter (e.g., a FI R filter) having a number of possible filter responses (e.g., provided by a number of sets of filter coefficients) may be used to provide filtering for the pre-processed signal and to reject any detected ACI. One of the possible filter responses is selected for use depending on whether and where ACI has been detected.

Abstract: Techniques for signaling power information to facilitate channel quality indicator (CQI) reporting are described. A Node B may send power information that may be used by a UE to determine a power per channelization code, POVSF. In one design, the power information includes a power offset between the power of a data channel, PHSPDSCH, and the power of a pilot channel. The Node B may determine PHSPDSCH based on the power available for the data channel, the number of available channelization codes, and a designated number of channelization codes. The UE may determine POVSF based on the power information from the Node B and the designated number of channelization codes. The UE may estimate at least one SINR of at least one transport block based on POVSF, determine CQI information for the transport block(s) based on the SINR, and send the CQI information to the Node B.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for a decision feedback equalizer wherein a correction term is used to compensate for slicer errors, thus avoiding error propagation. Filter coefficients for the equalizer are selected so as to minimize a cost function for the equalizer, including a correction term as a function of the energy of the filter coefficients. The equalizer includes a coefficient generator responsive to the correction term. One embodiment estimates a transmitted symbol from a received sample as a function of Signal-to-Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) of the received sample. The received sample is quantized and mapped to a region of a grid overlaid on the transmitted symbol constellation. The region may correspond to a symbol estimate value or may be processed further to obtain a symbol estimate value.

Abstract: Systems, methods and apparatus for configuring and accessing a random access channel in a CDMA communication system are disclosed. The number of users supported by a random access channel can be optimized by assigning a distinct time of arrival to each of a plurality of users. Each of the users can be time synchronized and can transmit data at a time that compensates for a propagation delay to allow the data to arrive at the destination receiver at the assigned time. In a CDMA system, each of the users can transmit data that is spread with the same spreading code, provided the cross correlation properties of the code are sufficient to allow identification of a source that is time offset relative to another user. The time of arrival can be determined based on the number of active users, and can be assigned as often as each transmission by each user.
