    Abstract: A method for wireless communication, including positioning a first plurality of slave transceivers within a region and positioning a second plurality of slave transceivers within the region in positions spatially separated from t he positions of the first plurality of slave transceivers. The method further includes receiving at the first plurality and at the second plurality of sla ve transceivers a reverse radio frequency (RF) signal generated by a mobile transceiver within the region and generating respective first and second sla ve signals responsive thereto. The method also includes conveying the first and second slave signals separately to a base transceiver station (BTS) external to the region, and processing the first and second slave signals conveyed to the BTS so as to recover information contained in the reverse RF signal generated within the region.

    Abstract: A method for communicating between a mobile transceiver in a multistory building and a wireless communication network external to the building, the building including alternating even and odd floors and having a near side and a far side, the method including dividing a plurality of slave transceivers into a main sub-group of slave transceivers and a diversity sub-group of slave transceivers, the transceivers being operative to transmit signals of a type which are conveyed over the wireless communication network. The method further includes positioning at the near side of at least one of the even floors one of the slave transceivers from the main sub-group and positioning at the far side of the at least one of the even floors one of the slave transceivers from the diversity sub-group, and also positioning at the near side of at least one of the odd floors another one of the slave transceivers from the diversity sub-group and positioning at the far side of the at least one of the odd floors another one of the slave transceivers from the main sub-group. The method further includes conveying a signal between the wireless communication network and the mobile transceiver via one or more of the plurality of slave transceivers positioned in the building.

    Abstract: Repeater apparatus for conveying a radio-frequency (RF) signal into an environment closed-off to the RF signal, including a master transceiver unit having a master port which receives the RF signal, a local oscillator (LO), which generates a LO signal at a LO frequency, and a frequency divider which divides the LO frequency of the LO signal by an integer to produce a divided LO signal. The master transceiver unit also includes a master mixer coupled to the master port and the divider which generates an intermediate-frequency (IF) signal responsive to the RF signal and the LO signal. The apparatus includes one or more slave transceiver units, each unit positioned within the environment closed-off to the RF signal and including a frequency multiplier which generates a recovered LO signal at the LO frequency by multiplying the frequency of the divided LO signal by the integer, a slave mixer coupled to the multiplier which generates a recovered RF signal responsive to the recovered LO signal and the IF signal, and a slave port coupled to the slave mixer which receives the recovered RF signal therefrom and transmits the recovered RF signal into the closed-off environment. The apparatus further includes one or more cables coupled between the master transceiver unit and the one or more slave transceiver units which convey the IF signal and the divided LO signal between the master transceiver unit and the one or more slave transceiver units.

    Abstract: A duplex radio transceiver, coupled to baseband circuitry and to an antenna, includes a receive chain, a transmit chain and a duplexer. The transmit chain includes filter components that attenuate signals originating from the transmit chain in a receive frequency band by a stop-band attenuation that is approximately equal to or greater than the stop-band attenuation of the duplexer in the receive band. Similarly, the receive chain includes filter components that attenuate signals in a transmit frequency band by a stop-band attenuation that is approximately equal to or greater than the sto p- band attenuation of the duplexer in the transmit band. A bias control circuit senses a power level associated with radio signals in the transmit chain and adjusts an amplifier in the receive chain responsive to the power level.

    Abstract: Techniques to determine the position of a terminal under the coverage of a repeater in a wireless communication system. In an aspect, an identification code is transmitted for each repeater and used by the terminal (or a PDE) to unambiguously identify the repeater. The identification codes for the repeaters in the system can be implemented with PN sequences at defined offsets that are specifically reserved for repeater identification. In another aspect, the identification code for each repeater is transmitted using a spread-spectrum signal designed to have minimal impact on the performance of the system and to be recoverable by the terminal in similar manner as for a forward modulated signal. In this way, no additional hardware is required for the terminal to recover the identifier signal. In one specific design, the spread spectrum identifier signal is generated in accordance with and conforms to the IS-95 CDMA standard.
