    Abstract: A wide aspect ratio television system includes memories (40,42,44) for storing and recovering a video input signal in response to read and write clock pulses, respectively. Write clock pulses are deleted (410, Figure 4) to compress edge regions of a wide aspect ratio input signal and read clock pulses are deleted (Figure 8) to restore the signal to its original aspect ratio. The pattern of deleted pulses is preferably altered (404) on a line-by-line basis to reduce visible artifacts of signal decimation. In dual mode receivers which may include provisions for controlling edge blanking or effecting edge interpolation, the pattern of deleted clock pulses may be selected as a function of the type of received signals.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To reduce the sampling rate and the quantity of used hardware at the time of transmitting information signal samples obtained from a plurality of channels. CONSTITUTION: Decoders 22R, 22G, and 22B transmit the signal samples of a plurality of channels supplied to inputs 16, 18, and 20 by alternately selecting the samples. The decoders 22R, 22G, and 22B also select the direction in which the variation amount of sample pairs is the smallest among transmitting directions around the alternately left samples and transmit control signals (SM) indicating the selected direction. On the receiving side, complete information signals are reproduced, together with the transmitted signals by reconstituting the alternately left samples of the transmitted signal samples and control signals.

    Abstract: ADAPTIVE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE COLOR CHANNELS OF A COLOR TV SIGNAL The parent application relates to the removal of aliases aliases from at least a first component signal of a video signal, using one alias-free component of said video signal, by determining from said alias free component the direction of least resolution and averaging said alias containing component in said direction The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for encoding the video signal in a novel manner permitting such alias removal to be readily achieved on decoding. According to the invention, a video signal having at least two components is encoded by periodically sampling at least a first signal component with offset samples, said first signal component having frequency components that can exceed one half the sampling frequency, and sampling a second signal component at a frequency at least about twice the maximum of its highest frequency and about twice the sampling frequency of said first component signal.

    Abstract: A color television camera includes imagers which produce signals representative of various colors of a scene. The signals are multiplexed to an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for conversion to sequential digital video form for processing by a single-channel digital processor. In order to avoid loss of resolution, and to take full advantage of the speed of operation of the ADC, the imagers are clocked mutually out-of-phase so as to sequentially provide imager signals at a rate related to the multiplexer rate.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for producing a frozen television picture are disclosed. Successive fields of picture information are generated by an interpolator which is responsive to a video input signal. These successive fields are applied to the input of a first field store device. The video input signal is applied to the input of a second field store device so that the successive fields of the video input signal correspond in time to the successive fields generated by the interpolator. Lines from the respective field store devices are sequenced repetitively to form a video signal representing the frozen television picture. The interpolator generates fields which, when displayed with corresponding fields of the video input signal, minimizes motion-induced artifacts without unduly degrading vertical resolution.
