It more particularly relates to the preparation of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and of 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The process for the preparation of a substituted 4-hydroxybenzaldlehyde, substituted at least in the 3 position by an alkoxy group, is characterized in that it comprises subjecting a substituted phenol compound, substituted at least in the 2 position by an alkoxy group and in which the 4 and 6 positions are free, to a first stage of carboxylation in the 6 position, then to a stage of hydroxymethylation in the 4 position, followed by a stage of oxidation of the hydroxymethyl group to a formyl group, and finally to a last decarboxylation stage.\!

Abstract: The present invention concerns a process for the preparation of a 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and of a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and derivatives thereof from a mixture of two phenolic compounds, one carrying a formyl or hydroxymethyl group in the 2 position, and the other carrying a formyl or hydroxymethyl group in the 4 position. The invention also concerns the preparation of a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde from said mixture. The invention more particularly concerns the preparation of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and of 3-ethoxy4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, respectively known as "vanillin" and ethylvanillin". The process for the preparation of a 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and derivatives thereof is characterised in that the formyl or hydroxymethyl group in the 2 position of compound (A) in a mixture of phenolic compounds, one (A) carrying a formyl or hydroxymethyl group in the 2 position, and the other (B) carrying a formyl or hydroxymethyl group in the 4 position, is selectively oxidised to a carboxy group and optionally a hydroxymethyl group of compound (B) in the 4 position is selectively oxidised to a formyl group, thus producing a mixture of a 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde.

Abstract: El objetivo de la presente invencion es un proceso para la preparacion de un 4-hidroxibenzaldehído que posee al menos un substituyente en la posicion orto al grupo OH. Esta se refiere más particularmente a la preparacion de 3-metoxi-4-hidroxibenzaldehído y de 3-etoxi-4-hidroxibenzaldehído. El proceso para la preparacion de un 4-hidroxi-benzaldehído substituido al menos en la posicion 3 con un grupo alcoxi, está caracterizado porque comprende el sujetar un compuesto de fenol substituido, substituido al menos en la posicion 2 por un grupo alcoxi y en el cual las posiciones 4 y 6 están libres, a una primera etapa de carboxilacion en la posicion 6, luego a una etapa de hidroximetilacion en la posicion 4, seguido por una etapa de oxidacion del grupo hidroximetilo a un grupo formilo, y finalmente a una ultima etapa de descarboxilacion.

Abstract: A method for preparing a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde having at least one substituent in the ortho position of the OH group, is disclosed. In particular, the preparation of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde is disclosed. The method for preparing a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde which is at least 3-substituted by an alkoxy group comprises a step wherein a phenol compound which is at least 2-substituted by an alkoxy group and has positions 4 and 6 free is carboxylated in position 6 then hydroxymethylated in position 4, followed by a step of oxidising the hydroxymethyl group to a formyl group, and finally a decarboxylation step.
