    Abstract: A digital transmitter with an analog sensor uses an integrating analog-to-digital (A/D) converter to digitize the analog signal from the sensor. The A/D converter produces a digital output which is a continuous, non-rezeroed integrated average of the analog signal, so that the integrated average of the digital output over time does not contain inherent quantization errors. A microcomputer system digitally filters the signal from the A/D converter, and then uses the digitally filtered signal to produce the transmitter output signal. By varying the response time of the digital filter, the response time and resolution of the transmitter can be varied.

    Abstract: An industrial process control transmitter has a modular construction, with a detector module and an output module electrically connected together by a serial bus. The output module includes a microcomputer, a modem for digital communication over the two-wire loop, analog output circuitry for controlling loop current, a digital-to-analog converter, and a memory for storing calibration factors and D/A characterization factors. The detector module includes several sensors with associated circuitry to convert the sensor signals to digital signals. The detector module also includes a memory which contains characterization factors unique to the sensors which can be used by the microcomputer to correct the digital values provided by the detector circuitry. The microcomputer of the output module is considered the master unit, and all of the circuits of the detector board which interface with the serial bus are considered slave units. Data is collected by the microcomputer when a selected detector circuit provides an interrupt over the serial bus. The microcomputer then provides a select signal requesting data. The detector module provides data from the sensor circuits in a selected order in response to the select signal.

    Abstract: A vortex flow transmitter (10) has a filtering circuit (20) receiving a noise contaminated input signal representative of the flow and which has a fundamental frequency varying responsively to flow. The filter (20) filters the input signal using one of a family of HP filter characteristics. Each member of the family of HP filters has varying corner frequencies, each filter having a unique switchup and a unique switchdown value assigned to it. Adaptive response means (40) select a current HP filter for use in the filter means. The adaptive means use one selection method when the flow is increasing and another selection method when the flow decreases. Output means (52) convert the signal from the filter means into a transmitter output, typically a 4-20 mA current or a frequency output representative of the flow.

    Abstract: A pressure sensor utilizes the effect of different elastic moduli between layers or sections of different material that are bonded together to form a body, so that when the bonded material unit is subjected to a uniform hydrostatic external pressure, the differences in the elastic moduli of each of the materials will cause the materials to deflect in a predictable manner proportional to pressure. The amount of warpage or deflection of the body of material can be measured as a function of pressure. Specifically, two layers of materials, such as silicon and borosilicate glass, which have substantially different elastic moduli can be bonded across an interface surface to form an assembly, and when subjected to a substantially uniform pressure on the exterior surfaces the assembly will deflect for indicating applied pressure at relatively high pressure ranges. The bonded material assembly is placed in a fluid to provide a substantially uniform applied hydrostatic pressure on all exposed surfaces of the bonded material assembly.

    Abstract: A transmitter senses a process variable and provides a two-wire output adjusted by a span adjustment. The transmitter has a sensor which senses the process variable and provides a sensor signal. An output circuit provides a two-wire output representative of the sensed process variable. A span-controlling circuit is coupled between the sensor and the output circuit and receives a span adjustment. The span-controlling circuit includes an amplifier coupled to a potentiometer which adjusts the span based on the span adjustment. The wiper of the potentiometer is connected to the amplifier output so that one portion of the potentiometer resistance provides feedback from the amplifier output to the amplifier input. A second portion of the potentiometer resistance is coupled between the amplifier output and the output circuit. Both portions of resistance affect both the span and the resolution of the output. The arrangement provides an improved resolution over a wide turn-down-ratio.
