Abstract: The protective material for equipment in contact with hot glass is a knitted fabric placed between them. The fabric has wales of stitches to form at least one flat surface. The knitted fabric has polygonal openings in it, formed by a number of non-bonded segments each of part of a wale and the bonded segments. Two to four stitches (m) are knitted together between adjacent wales (A,B) by a reciprocal transfer of the stitches (m) from one wale to another. The fabric is knitted on a twin-bed knitter, giving two surfaces on opposing planes, or a single-bed knitter giving one surface on a single plane. The fabric is knitted with metal or non-metal filaments such as of ceramics, silicon carbide or synthetics. The filaments can also be a hybrid of metal and non-metal materials. The metal filaments are of non-oxidizing steel, especially type 316L and pref. austenitic. The non-oxidizing steel has a chrome content of at least 17 % and especially 17-19 %, a nickel content of at least 12 % of especially 13-14 %, and a carbon content of ≤ 0.03 %. The fabric openings are in a symmetrical shape, with the same lengths for the bonded and non-bonded segments of the material, or they asymmetrical and in different lengths. The open zones are formed of ≥ 2 stitches and especially 2-10 stitches and preferably 2-6 stitches. The open zones are hexagonal. The width and/or shape of the openings are varied through the knitting of the material to give knitted zones of a different appearance and properties. The openings have a circumference of 8-80 mm and especially 20-40 mm. The fabric has floating stitches using spun filaments, monofilaments or multifilaments. The filaments are used singly, in a metric count of 1-30 such as 1.5-10.0 for metallic filaments, or a number of filaments and especially 2-5 filaments. Or the knitter uses at least 90 elementary filaments each with a diameter of ≤ 50 mu m and preferably 8-20 mu m. The knitted fabric has a thickness of ≤ 5 mm and especially 1-3 mm. The knitted fabric has a thermal conductivity of ≤ 3 W.m .K and especially 0.1-0.2 W.m .K . The fabric has an air permeability of at least 2 m/sec. The two surfaces of the fabric can be distinguished by the nature of the filaments forming the surfaces, or it has two identical surfaces.
