Abstract:
A filter diplexer (133) is provided for matching a filter (132) to a mixer (134) upconverting an intermediate frequency signal to an output signal by mixing the intermediate frequency signal with a local oscillator (152). The filter (132) filters the intermediate frequency before applying it to the mixer (134). A diplexer (133) is provided between the filter (132) and the mixer (134) for matching the impedance of the filter (132) to that of the mixer (134). The diplexer (133) includes an inductor (302) connecting the filter (132) to the mixer (134) and a capacitor (306) and a resistor (308) in series in shunt configuration with the inductor (302).
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are disclosed for providing program selection in a packet-based communications system. A program definition (110) is generated for each program (BS , BS , ...BS ) that specifies which of the elementary streams carried on a particular frequency channel comprise that program. The program definition for each program is periodically, and frequently, transmitted to each subscriber location (72, 74) on the frequency channel carrying the elementary streams of the selected program, extracts a program definition for the selected program from the tuned frequency channel, and then obtains from the frequency channel the elementary streams (V, A, CC) specified in the extracted program definition as comprising the selected program.
Abstract:
At the Power On Reset mode of the receiver, the search mode (201) is entered and the tuner AFC is swept in a search for the QPSK carrier. In the detect signal step (202), a low OOS signal is sought. If the low OOS signal is not found, the false lock detect step (205) checks to see if the AFC voltage is remaining constant. If it is, then the loop is broken in the break loop step (206). In the break loop step (206), the loop is held open for about 20 milliseconds, then the search mode (201) is entered again.

Abstract:
A method of transmitting addressed messages to subscribers comprises the steps of defining the group or individual subscriber to be adddessed, creating the message, assigning the message to the individual or group to be addressed, scheduling the message from transmission, transmitting the message, and recording the transmission of the message. A system control computer (120), according to the present invention, comprises a billing computer interface for interfacing with a billing computer (110) and a user interface for providing access to messaging services to a system operator, each of the billing and user interfaces for providing data to a group queuing subsystem and a system event scheduler, respectively. The user interface further accesses a database, the database shared by the system event scheduler and message, device and group manager. The device manager in turn, when scheduled by the system event scheduler, coordinates the tansmission of addressed messages via either a headend controller (130) (via an inband channel) or an addressable data transmitter (via an out-of-band channel) (140).
Abstract:
A method for generating a picture-in-picture digital television frame comprising the step of: converting a first analog television signal into a first digital frame comprising a first prescribed number of pixels; deriving a mean-only frame (20) from the first digital frame, the mean-only frame comprising a second prescribed number of pixels; creating an insertion (50) frame on the basis of the mean-only frame; and inserting (40) the insertion frame into a second digital frame, thereby generating a picture-in-picture digital frame.
Abstract:
A polarity reversing DC power inserter circuit (204) for other signal control apparatus used in a cable or community antenna television (CATV) signal distribution system. A power transformer circuit (210) receives a 117 volts AC power source at a subscriber's premise and converts it to a lower voltage positive and negative DC. A polar reversing circuit (204) comprising switching transistors (220, 221) and a 50 % duty cycle multivibrator (230) switches between the lower voltage DC at a frequency less than 10 Hz so as to avoid shock hazards associated with normal alternating current, while alternating sufficiently often to avoid electrolysis and corrosion problems associated with use of direct current (DC) a cable drop (115) to be provided uplink to the signal control apparatus. At the signal control apparatus, the polarity reversing DC is converted into DC by a power utilization circuit, and then utilized to power the signal control apparatus.
Abstract:
An off-premises method and apparatus for the interdiction of unauthorized channels of a broadband cable television signal includes common circuitry for adjusting the amplitude and equalization levels of the broadband (CATV) signals and one or more subscriber modules for generating jamming signals of different frequencies which are used to interdict one or more unauthorized channels. Each subscriber module (134) is associated with a subscriber and is programmable and addressable to adjust the jamming parameters of that subscriber independently of other subscribers. Each subscriber module circuit (224) comprises a plurality of latches (322), each of which is associated with one of a plurality of digital to analog converters (324). Each of the digital to analog converters drives (300) one or more frequency agile oscillators (328) with its analog output to generate the jamming signals. The subscriber module (134) is based on a sequential state machine (400, 402) which loads frequency control words corresponding to the jammed channels from a frequency control memory into each latch on a cyclic basis.
Abstract:
A system (222) and method for disabling the output of a data transmission system when a high error rate is detected. In the case of audio data, the output is disabled by muting. Error rate detection functions as a digital equivalent of a leaky integrator with hysteresis. A predetermined value (400) is added to an accumulator (406) when an error is detected. More serious errors are given greater values (402, 404). The accumulator is also decremented (410) at a programmable rate (408) that is proportional to the maximum acceptable error rate. The accumulator sum is continuously compared (414) to a programmable error threshold (412), and if the threshold is exceeded, the output of the data transmission system is disabled. The output is not re-enabled until the accumulator is decremented to a lower threshold. In one embodiment, the accumulator is decremented at a different rate (500) when the output is disabled.
