    Abstract: An apparatus for reading data to and from a moving magneto-optical recording medium includes a carriage which is moved across data tracks contained in the medium. Optics for focusing a spot of light on the medium and a mechanism for fine tracking of the spot on a selected track are carried on the carriage and are movable independently of the carriage in response to separately amplified servo signals which are derived from light which is reflected from the spot of light on the data-containing track.

    Abstract: A micromachine and a manufacturing method according to the present invention are suitable for a micromachine that has a dynamic first microstructured portion serving as a drive portion, and a static second microstructured portion adapted to perform a switching function and functions to be performed as an optical element. The second microstructured portion can be manufactured at least without complex steps, such as a silicon process, by forming a static second microstructure on the dynamic first microstructured portion or in such a way as to be overlaid thereon by mold transfer. Thus, the microstructured portion of a complex shape can be easily formed with good reproducibility. This contributes to increased productivity thereof. Especially, when a plurality of elements are arranged in an array, similarly as in the case of a spatial light modulator, the stable reproduction thereof is achieved by the mold transfer. Thus, as compared with the case of manufacturing all elements in a silicon process, the probability of an occurrence of a defect is very low. Consequently, this contributes to improved yield of micromachines.

    Abstract: A picture display device in accordance with the present invention is provided with a light guiding member equipped with a total reflection surface capable of totally reflecting and transmitting an incoming light ray for image display, and an optical switching member having a micro prism that extracts evanescent light leaking out of the total reflection surface and reflects it to a display area of the total reflection surface. The incoming light ray is applied to the display area from two symmetric directions so as to obtain outgoing light rays from all surfaces of the micro prism. Hence, a picture display device featuring still higher brightness and higher contrast can be attained. Furthermore, an apex angle of the micro prism, etc. are optimized thereby to provide further uniform outgoing light arranged perpendicularly with respect to the total reflection surface, thus realizing a picture display device capable of displaying high-quality images.

    Abstract: A laser beam emitted from the laser emission unit (20) is emitted through an objective lens (12) and focused on an optical medium. A reflected beam from the optical medium is returned through the objective lens and a diffraction grating (11) to a signal detection circuit (34) in the laser emission unit. Hitherto, many operating functions have been provided in the optical head (1). However, the present invention provides the laser emission unit in a lens holder (10) and with a plurality functions in the emission unit itself and so the space in the optical head can be reduced. Moreover, the space for the light path both emitted and received is also decreased. Thus, the size of the optical head is extremely reduced and since the optical head can be assembled by a smaller number of parts, the production costs can be decreased.

    Abstract: By using a semiconductor laser of a relatively long wavelength relative to the track pitch of an optical recording medium, and the optical super-resolution technique, there are provided an optical head and an optical recording apparatus which permit processing such as recording and regeneration onto and from a conventional CD-R with not problem, and processing of an optical recording medium of the DVD standard coping with a high recording density. In the optical head and the optical recording apparatus of the present invention, a semiconductor laser having a relatively long wavelength relative to the track pitch of an optical recording medium can be used. The invention therefore provides an optical head and an optical recording apparatus which overcome the limit on efforts toward a higher density, permit recording and regeneration at a high recording density at a low cost with a high reliability. The invention provides also an optical head and an optical recording apparatus capable of coping with the tendency toward a further higher density in the future.
