Abstract: Time-base compressed image data representing a program is supplied from a local conditional access circuit (5) to two recording signal processing circuits (12, 16) which supply the data to be recorded simultaneously in time-compressed form to a digital VTR (14) and a hard disc drive (HDD) (18). The HDD (18) need only store enough data to allow the digital VTR (14) to record the entire program and to synchronize the output of the VTR with the output of the HDD. Once the program has been recorded on the VTR (14), it is reproduced therefrom concurrently with the portion of the program reproduced by the HDD (18) and, once synchronization therebetween is reached, the VTR-reproduced data replaces the HDD-reproduced data. The reproduced data is supplied to an MPEG decoder circuit (9) to be output as a reconstructed program for immediate display.

Abstract: The video tape recorder wherein a video signal is converted into a digital signal to be segment-recorded to make possible smooth continuation of consecutive taking in picture recording. A predetermined identificaion data (VIDEO ID, TRACK ID) is added when segment-recording a video signal. At the time of starting recording, the magnetic tape (T) is rewound and switching to reproducing mode is made and then, on the basis of the identification data, switching from the reproducing mode to recording mode is made at a break (6) between units (4, 2; 8, 10, 12) of signal processing.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for recording and reproducing digital information signals including image and audio portions in successive tracks on a magnetic tape. An ID signal is produced (112) for one of an image portion and an audio portion of a corresponding digital information signal to be recorded. The ID signal indicates whether the portion is to be after-recorded in a respective track. The ID signal is combined (14) with the portion to form a recording signal. Previously recorded digital information signals are reproduced (13A, 13B, 21A, 21B, 22, 23) from the track and an ID signal thereof is obtained. The recording of the portion in the track is controlled (51, 52, 53, 54, 55) based on the reproduced ID signal.

Abstract: In a digital video tape recorder (VTR) (31, 32) which reproduces digital video and audio signals from a magnetic tape, a copy protect bit in the reproduced digital video signal is detected (6), and on the basis of the copy protect bit, a code is generated (7) and inserted (8) into the vertical blanking interval of the reproduced video signal. When a video signal (which may be in analog or digital form) having the code in the vertical blanking interval is received in a digital VTR, the code is detected (20) and recording of the video signal and an associated audio signal is inhibited (18, 21, 22, 23) if the code indicates that the received video signal is copy protected.

Abstract: In a digital video tape recorder (VTR) which reproduces digital video and audio signals from a magnetic tape, a copy protect bit in the reproduced digital video signal is detected, and on the basis of the copy protect bit, a code is generated and inserted into the vertical blanking interval of the reproduced video signal. When a video signal (which may be in analog or digital form) having the code in the vertical blanking interval is received in a digital VTR, the code is detected and recording of the video signal and an associated audio signal is inhibited if the code indicates that the received video signal is copy protected.
