A recording and reproducing device provided with at least a pair of rotary heads having different azimuths, running control means which controls the running of a magnetic tape, and recording timing control means which controls the recording by the rotary heads so that the recording can be performed in a first period when digital data having a first data rate are inputted, whereby the digital data can be recorded on the magnetic tape at the recording timing of the recording timing control means. In addition, the recording and reproducing device is also provided with a memory means which temporarily stores digital data supplied from the outside, reading means which reads out the digital data stored in the memory means, and signal processing means which performs a prescribed process of the digital data read out from the memory means. When digital data having a second data rate which is different from the first data rate are inputted, the recording timing control means and reading-out means perform processes at a speed based on the ratio between the two data rates and, at the same time, the running control means controls the running speed of the magnetic tape based on the data rate ratio.

Program content is easily selected on a playback apparatus having a plurality of program content recording locations. A video recording management server (11) manages program IDs, the video recording condition of program content on a television apparatus (10), and recording location information indicating on which server each program content is recorded, in association with each other as program management information. The television apparatus (10) displays an electronic program guide (100) in which past and future programs are displayed integrally, and displays a video recording complete mark (RM) for programs previously recorded on a user content server (13). On the other hand, when an instruction to play back program content is made in the electronic program guide (100), the television apparatus (10) receives the program content from a server designated from the video recording management server (11) to perform streaming playback. Thus, the television apparatus (100) can perform video recording and playback of program content desired by the user by means of the electronic program guide (100), without making the user specify a program content recording location.

A plasma display unit which is high in luminous efficiency and can be produced with a high yield. A bus electrode (18) is formed extending over a sustain electrode (37) forming area and an area above a front glass substrate (11) excluding the former area, with a gap provided on one edge side opposite to a side where respective sustain electrodes (37) form a pair. A bus electrode (18) does not cover a sustain electrode (37) widely but gives a shape of its entire width being extended to provide a larger sectional area than before. The length-wise end of a sustain electrode (37) has a forward taper shape with its side face forming an acute angle with a front glass substrate (11) to eliminate a step difference.

It is judged before recording programming whether analog copy is inhibited or digital copy is inhibited from information on DM_copy_control_description and information on CGMS or M-CGMS. If analog copy is inhibited, analog programmed recording is made nonselectable by using a video mouse; and if digital copy is inhibited, digital programmed recording conforming to the IEEE1394 is made impossible. When digital copy or analog copy is inhibited, a warning to the effect is indicated. Before a programmed recording starts, if the output of an IRD is being recorded by another device, if an MD synchronous recording is being performed, if the recording device is in operation, if no tape or no disk is loaded, if the tape or disk is inhibited from being recorded, if the recording mode of the recording device is an analog recording mode, or if the object is a record inhibited part of a smart file, an indication to the effect is made and the programmed recording is canceled.

[Object] To prevent image quality deterioration due to unnecessary format conversion. [Solution] An STB (set top box) 200 receives bit stream data that is transmitted from a broadcast station 100 in such a manner as to be carried on a broadcast wave, and obtains stereoscopic image data, audio data, and the like. Furthermore, the STB 200 transmits the stereoscopic image data and the audio data to the TV (television receiver) 300 through the digital interface of HDMI. In a case where the received stereoscopic image data can be handled by a TV 300 and, furthermore, the TV 300 has requested that transmission of the stereoscopic image data be performed without performing format conversion, the STB 200 does not convert the format of the received image data, and transmits the received image data to the TV 300 in the as-is format. Furthermore, in the case of other cases, the STB 200 converts in advance the format of the received stereoscopic image data into, for example, a format that is set by the user, and transmits the stereoscopic image data to the TV 300.

An apparatus capable of performing both analog recording/reproducing and digital recording/reproducing on/from the same video tape, which issues an alarm if a tape cassette containing a tape on which video is recorded in analog form is loaded to reproduce the video. Further the apparatus issues an alarm if a tape cassette containing a tape on which transport streams of different specifications or digital signals of a recording method other than the MPEG2 method are recorded is loaded to reproduce them. The apparatus reads information about the recording method of the program which the user wants to view referring to the smart file image. If the program to be reproduced is recorded in digital form, the apparatus changes its input to the digital video input; and if the program is recorded in analog form, the apparatus changes its input to the analog video input.

A receiver receives a digital signal from an external device by digital signal receiver means or receives an analog signal from an external device by analog signal receiver means. Output means outputs the received digital or analog signal, together with graphics information for operating the external device from generation means if necessary. No matter whether an external device supplies a digital or analog signal, the signal and graphics information may serve to operate an external device, thus facilitating control of an external device.

In a Viterbi decoding method or apparatus, a reception code, produced by precoding a transmission code and transmitting the precoded transmission code through a partial response transmission path, is processed to detect whether the present state is a plus (+) merge, a minus (-) merge or a no merge state. A provisional value is estimated for the transmission code corresponding to the reception code, and the provisional value is stored in a buffer. When the present state is a (+) or (-) merge, that is, other than a no merge state, a decoded value is obtained for the transmission code and the provisional value in the buffer is updated with the decoded value.

In a digital video tape recorder (VTR) (31, 32) which reproduces digital video and audio signals from a magnetic tape, a copy protect bit in the reproduced digital video signal is detected (6), and on the basis of the copy protect bit, a code is generated (7) and inserted (8) into the vertical blanking interval of the reproduced video signal. When a video signal (which may be in analog or digital form) having the code in the vertical blanking interval is received in a digital VTR, the code is detected (20) and recording of the video signal and an associated audio signal is inhibited (18, 21, 22, 23) if the code indicates that the received video signal is copy protected.

A recording/reproducing apparatus, e.g. a digital video tape recorder, etc., is applicable to a transmission system so as sufficiently to utilize communication capacity. The recording/reproducing apparatus comprises: a recording element (e.g. a rotary head) for recording, onto a recording medium (e.g. a magnetic tape), digital data which has been time base compression processed and is delivered from the outside, e.g. broadcasting station side, etc.; a control circuit for carrying out control such as to read out the digital data from the recording medium at a speed lower than a recording speed in dependency upon the time base compression processing applied to the digital data; and an output circuit for outputting, as a reproduced output, digital data which has been read out from the recording medium. In addition to the above-mentioned ordinary reproduction, in the case of carrying out fast-feed reproduction or rewinding reproduction, the control circuit may carry out control such that the magnetic tape runs at a higher speed, and the output circuit may select and output only valid digital data of digital data obtained by tracing of the rotary head.
