Abstract: The present invention relates to a liquid crystal device of the type which comprises a pair of substrates (1a, 1b), and a liquid crystal (5) provided between the paired substrates (1a, 1b) wherein fine domains whose threshold voltages for switching the liquid crystal (5) are different from one another are finely distributed in said liquid crystal (5). In this liquid crystal device, an alignment film (3a, 3b) formed on the substrate (1a, 1b) is an obliquely evaporated film (6, 7) constituting of a multitude of rhombic columns wherein at least a part of a conductive material is intervened inbetween adjacent rhombic columns.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device having fast response characteristics and enabling analog gray-scaleal display is provided. The liquid crystal display device is formed of a liquid crystal material having the chiral smectic C phase. The projection component on the substrates of the axial direction of a cone delineated by a liquid crystal molecule, and the projection component on the substrates of the axial direction of the liquid crystal molecule itself, are adapted to be coincident with the processing direction for uniaxial orientation of the substrates, this state being monostabled as the initial state. On application of an electrical field, the liquid crystal molecule is rotated along the cone and the apparent tilt angle as viewed on the substrate surface is continuously changed in accordance with the strength of the applied electrical field. The intensity of the transmitted light is increased continuously with increasing tilt angle to obtain the continuous gray-scale or analog gray-scale.

Abstract: The method involves providing a first time period for application of an electrical signal for selecting one of two states, and a second time period for holding the selected state, either without application of the electrical signal, or with the application of an electrical signal for selection of none of the states using the memory characteristic of the ferroelectric liquid crystal or antiferroelectric liquid crystal during a common pixel selection period. The liquid crystal composition contains a clathrate compound of liquid crystal molecules with cyclodextrin or a derivative thereof. The clathrate compound functions to increase the free volume of liquid crystal molecules. The liquid crystal composition is prepared by dissolving in a solvent a liquid crystal and cyclodextrin (or a derivative thereof), thereby forming a clathrate compound and adding this clathrate compound to a base liquid crystal material.

Abstract: A functional molecular element whose functions can be controlled by an electric field based on a new principle. A Lewis base molecule ( 14 ) with positive permittivity anisotropy or a dipole moment in the major axis direction of the molecule is disposed, via a metal ion ( 3 ) that can act as a Lewis acid, in a pendant-like form on a key molecule ( 2 ) in the form of a line or film that has a conjugated system and exhibits conductivity, thereby forming a functional molecular element 1 that can realize a function where the conformation changes due to the application of an electric field. The conductive key molecule ( 2 ) and the Lewis base molecule ( 14 ) form a complex with the metal ion ( 3 ). When an electric field is applied in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the paper in FIG. 1 (b), for example, the Lewis base molecule ( 14 ) performs a 90° "neck twisting" movement with the up-down direction in the drawing as the axis. Also, when an electric field is applied in the up-down direction in the drawing as shown in FIG. 1 (c), the Lewis base molecule ( 14 ) performs a "see-saw" movement with the direction perpendicular to the plane of the paper as the axis, thereby switching the conductivity of the conductive key molecule ( 2 ).
