Abstract: PURPOSE: To avoid the outflow of data and to easily execute the maintenance work by detecting matching/unmatching between the password inputted to an internal bus through a line and a held password and permitting the access passing the line at the time of obtaining the matching result. CONSTITUTION: When a download command is inputted from a computer 13 for check, the inputted password is outputted to a password circuit 27 with one word as a unit by a CPU 22, and the result of successive collation between this password and the password stored in a password memory 30 is obtained. When the password added to the download command matches with the password stored in the password memory 30, the processing of the download command is executed. Thus, software is downloaded from the computer 13 for check through an interface 20 or the like, and a control program or the like of optical disk drives 3A to 3D is updated.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a recording/playing system in which an external request of access can be dealt with quickly by providing means for writing recording state information, read out through a recording state information read out means, into a memory means in the order to shelf number. CONSTITUTION: A recording medium D, thrown into a recording medium I/O section 49, is transferred to a recorder/player 2 and set thereat so that an information signal is recorded on the recording medium D or reproduced therefrom. A control section 28 reads out recording state information, including a defect management table, from the recording medium D reproduced through the recorder/player 2 using a recording state information read-out means and then writes the information thus read out into a memory means 57 in the order of shelf number using a recording state writing means. Consequently, the recording state information of the recording medium D thrown into the recording medium I/O section 49 is stored in an arrangement variable region of the memory means 57 corresponding to the number of shelf T for containing the recording medium D. Since the information recorded on the recording medium D is not required to be read out when the medium D transferred from some shelf T is recorded or reproduced through the recorder/player 2, external request of access can be dealt with quickly.
