Abstract: 5607. Thomas, J. March 17. Brakes.-Either-side railway-wagon brakes are applied by a lever g, secured to the rocking shaft d and actuated by levers s at either side and opposite ends, one of which is fitted with a catch to hold the brakes off. The lever g has pivoted to it a pawl l, Figs. 4 and 5, to engage a rack c. which may have stops v, v , secured to the usual bracket a. The pawl has a downward projection m to engage a circular boss n on a stud j, working in a slot k in the lever g and secured to a second lever i, which is pivoted to the arm g at h. A pair of links o, o' working in guides o connect the lever i with the arms on the hand-lever shafts, one of which extends across the carriage. The arrangement is such that, on the hand-lever s being raised to release the brakes, the stud j is pushed along the slot and raises the pawl out of engagement, as shown in Fig. 5, with the rack, indicated' by dotted lines. The brakes are held off by a pawl u, Fig. 1, engaging a notched circular plate t on the shaft q , the pawl having a tail u to limit its movement. To apply the brakes, the handle s' is jerked upwards, so that a projection on the plate disengages the pawl, and the handle is brought sharply down before the pawl falls, thus pulling over the levers i, g, till the brakes are set when they are held by the pawl l engaging the rack c.

Abstract: 21,693. Rees, R., Peel, C. E., and Thomas, J. Oct. 8. Rolling.-The rolls of a rolling-mill for rolling plates and the like, either hot or cold, are prevented from becoming overheated by cooling them by jets or currents of air or mixed air and steam. Perforated pipes c , c , Fig. 2, are arranged above and below each pair of rolls b, and they are supplied with compresses air from a pipe c which passes in front of all the rolls and is connected by branch pipes c to the perforated pipes. A shield c may be arranged above the lower pipe. The pipes may be replaced by two or more nozzles, or fans, and the position of the draught apparatus varied as required. An injector device actuated by steam or air has converging guide-plates c , Fig. 11, forming elongated nozzles through which the steam or air is discharged and which act as combining.tubes so that mixed jets are discharged on to the rolls.

Abstract: 8566. Thomas, J. April 15. Steelyard apparatus; value-indicating apparatus. -Relates to the application to weighing-apparatus of a modification of the calculating-apparatus described in Specification No. 3276, A.D. 1900, [Abridgment Class Registering &c.]. In the weighing-apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the beam D carrying the scale-pan 0 and the counterpoise E is graduated in such a manner that a runner F indicates upon it the weight of the articles in the pan C, in pounds or other units. A rotatable drum provided with a handle G and covered with a price-chart is mounted in a casing G parallel to the beam D. The rate per pound is indicated through a slot H in the casing G, and the value of the weight indicated on the beam by the runner F through a longitudinal slot I. The values shown in the slot I relate to quarter, half, and complete pounds only, the prices of one, two, and three ounces being indicated at a subsidiary slot L. When the apparatus is used with articles of over ten, twenty, or thirty pounds weight, a suitable additional counterpoise N is added to the counterpoise E, and the value of the corresponding weight, as indicated at one of three slots K, is then added to the value indicated at the slots I, L. The chart is constructed with two rows of values opposite each rate figure, the lower row being computed at this rate for quarter, half, and complete pounds, and the upper at the adjacent lower rate for one, two, and three ounces, and ten, twenty, and thirty pounds. The value-indicating apparatus is also applicable to weighing-apparatus of the beam type other than that shown.

Abstract: 429. Thomas, J. Jan. 7. Saddle clips.-The clip consists of two parts with curved central portions a, c adapted to embrace the L pin, and lateral extensions f which are threaded to receive nutsj. Washers h, i with suitably-shaped openings are placed on the extensions and are caused to grip the wires k of the saddle frame by screwing up the nutsj. One of each pair of washers is provided with pins l engaging holes in the corresponding washer to allow adjustment of the inclination of the saddle. The two parts f are provided with projections g and recesses which engage together. In modification, the washers are adapted for saddles with double wires.

Abstract: 22,748. Thomas, J. Oct. 4. Gauge-glass fittings.-Relates to apparatus of the character described in Specifications No. 29,091, A.D. 1896, and No. 4322, A.D. 1897. The top and bottom fittings are made in two parts a, a' connected by a union C or otherwise, so that, should the glass break, spare fittings may be readily substituted. At this union is placed the automatic valve E for shutting off steam, the valve in the upper fitting being grooved to allow of slight leakage for clearing the steam-ways and localizing the fracture. The steam-way opening into the chamber F nearest the boiler is shaped so that the valve E cannot rest upon it. The auxiliary tube J, which may be interchangeably metal or glass, fits into blocks K screwing into sockets L and provided with screw packing-glands M. The tube J rests on shoulders in the lower block. As described in Specification No. 4322, A.D. 1897, a spring piston C , Fig. 3, may be used to hold the gauge glass B and guard N, but may have its spring on the outside ; further, it may be raised and lowered by a screw action, such as the nut and hand-wheel 0 with pins P engaging a groove in its side. Other forms of screw action are described, and the spring may be dispensed with in certain cases ; or cams or eccentrics may be substituted for screws.

Abstract: 4322. Thomas, J. Feb. 17. Gauge-glass fittings. - Relates t o improvements on the invention described in Specification No. 29,091, A.D. 1896. From each branch piece projects a spring- pressed hollow rod D having an enlargement C to receive the end of the glass B, which is made steam and water tight by packing G resting in the end of a slotted metal guard N. The rod D passes out through a stuffing- box F, and may have a second packing-ring d held down by a light spring e. To remove a glass, the rod D is pushed inwards by a lever J indicated in dotted lines, or by a lever K and link M, as shown in Fig. 2. If desired, the piston-rod end C may be secured to the guard N by a nut P as shown in Fig. 2. To prevent water striking the glass in case of fire &c., it may be protected by a shield W of horn, celluloid, or other transparent material. When each branch piece is made in two sections they are united, as shown in Fig. 3. To one portion Q is screwed a flanged collar R carrying a nut T which is screwed to the other part.
