The present invention relates to a composition comprising a lignin polyol, a method for the manufacturing of said composition and use thereof in different application areas, such as in adhesives, binders, castings,foams (such as in rigid polyurethaneand polyisocyanurate foams for thermal insulation and construction applications, semi-rigid, flexible, moulded, laminated, microcellular and viscoelastic polyurethane foams), fillers, glues, sealants, elastomers and rubbers. The present invention also relates to a method for the manufacturing of a foam and use of this foam.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a process for preparing coating compositions containing up to 100% bio-based content. The coating compositions are used for coating metal, paper and wood substrates in various applications. The process for preparing the coating composition comprises the steps of providing lignin, wherein the lignin is agglomerated and has a particle size distribution such that at least 80 wt-% of the agglomerates have a diameter within the range of from 0.2 mm to 5.0 mm, dissolving the agglomerated lignin in an organic solvent, and mixing the solution with a crosslinker to obtain a coating composition.

The present invention is directed to a process to produce agglomerated lignin with a controlled particle size distribution. The agglomerated lignin is essentially free of dust so that the risk of dust explosion is greatly reduced.

The present invention relates to a liquid lignin mixture comprising 3-50 wt% methanol, 12-50 wt% ligninand5-85 wt% aqueous alkali solution wherein the concentration of said aqueous alkali solution is 1 to 50 wt% of alkali in water, based on the weight of said alkali solution prior to mixing with the other components of the mixture. The liquid lignin mixture can be used to manufacture lignin-based phenolic resins, which are particularly useful in the manufacture of laminates.

The present invention relates to a method for increasing the reactivity of lignin which method comprises the following steps; providing a mixture comprising lignin and an alkali solution wherein the concentration of the alkali solution of the mixture is between 5-50% by weight, storing said mixture for a period of at least 1day whereby the reactivity of the lignin is increased. The present invention also relates to a resin composition comprising said lignin and use of said resin composition.
