Abstract: Recovery of fluorine cpds. from a spent alkylation catalyst contg. fluorosulphonic acid and sulphuric acid is carried out by adding to the spent catalyst water in an amt. at least sufficient to hydrolyse the fluorosulphonic acid to HF (pref. 3-15%); then subjecting the mixt. to distillation at normal or reduced press. (pref. =0.07 atm.) at 50-120 degrees C. (pref. 80-110 degrees C.); collecting a first fraction consisting mainly of HF; isolating as a second fraction the distillation residue contng. the remainder of HF and/or other fluorine cpds. and most of H2SO4 present in the spent catalyst body; converting the HF contained in the first fraction back into fluorosulphonic acid by treatment with SO3; contacting the second fraction with alumina to absorb HF and/or other fluorine cpds., or with silica to form SiF4 which is evapd.; subjecting the residual liq. contg. most of H2SO4 to evapn.; oxidising the resulting SO2 to SO3 and absorbing the latter in conc. H2SO4 which is subsequently diluted and used together with the regenerated fluorosulphonic acid to produce fresh alkylation catalyst. Used for the prodn. of branched 7-8C paraffins having a high octane number by reaction between iso-paraffins (isobutane, isopentane) and olefins (propylene, butylene) in the liq. phase in the presence of a catalytic system contg. SO2F(OH) and H2SO4. The catalysts are easily regenerated by the above method.

Abstract: Fluoride-containing scale can be removed from metal surfaces such as titanium, titanium alloys, nickel alloys, and stainless steel by contacting the metal surfaces with an aqueous salt solution of an inorganic acid, including its hydrates. The cationic portion of the salt can be aluminum, iron and mixtures thereof. The anionic portion of the salt can be a chloride, a nitrate, a sulfate, and mixtures thereof. The contracting occurs in the absence of the addition of an acid, such as hydrochloric, nitric, or sulfuric acid. The presence of the aqueous salt solution with the dissolved fluoride scale does not accelerate or increase the normal rate of metal corrosion that can occur in the absence of the aqueous salt solution or any acidic cleaning agent.

Abstract: A method is provided for the treatment of a waste water stream characterized by having toxic and corrosive properties due to the presence of a cyanides formates and a halide of a metal or ammonia comprising adding a ferrous ion to said waste water to convert the cyanides to iron cyanides, adding a base to said waste water until the pH of said waste water is adjusted to the range from about 9 to 11 to precipitate a sludge containing said iron cyanides, feeding said waste water to a biological reactor to convert said formates to carbon dioxide and a biological residue and recovering an environmentally upgraded waste water stream from said biological reactor.
