    Abstract: By filtering, through an ultrafiltration membrane of a 600-2000 fraction molecular weight, an aqueous sugar solution obtained by hydrolyzing a cellulose-containing biomass, removing fermentation inhibitors on the permeated side and recovering the sugar solution from the un-permeated side, this method is capable of manufacturing a sugar solution with an extremely low amount of fermentation inhibitors.

    Abstract: In a process of producing a sugar liquid from a woody biomass, the conventional techniques have such a problem that a specific component contained in the sugar liquid from the woody biomass remarkably deteriorates the filtration performance when the sugar liquid is filtrated through a microfiltration membrane and/or an ultrafiltration membrane. In the present invention, it becomes possible to improve the filtration performance of the sugar liquid through the microfiltration membrane and/or the ultrafiltration membrane, and it also becomes possible to produce the sugar liquid with high efficiency by hydrolyzing the woody biomass to produce a liquid component and then reacting the liquid component with a mannanase.

    Abstract: A fermentation apparatus that uses biomass as feedstock comprises: a device for carrying out high-temperature processing of biomass feedstock; a cooling means (90) for cooling a biomass liquid that has undergone high-temperature processing (101A); an enzyme saccharification tank (103) in which a cooled liquid (101B) is enzymatically saccharified; a foreign substance removal unit (113) provided with a solid-liquid separation device (112) and a microfiltration (MF) membrane (113a) for removing water-insoluble fermentation inhibitors contained in a sugar solution (104) extracted from the enzyme saccharification tank (103); a dilution tank (132) disposed downstream from the foreign substance removal unit (113), in which the sugar solution (104) from which water-insoluble fermentation inhibitors have been removed is diluted by adding water; a water separation unit (116) provided with a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane (116a) for removing water (114) from the diluted sugar solution (104) to obtain a concentrated sugar solution (115); and a fermentation tank (141) for carrying out fermentation using the concentrated sugar solution (115).

    Abstract: In solid-liquid separation of a saccharified liquid by filtration through a microfiltration membrane, the filtration performance can be increased by adjusting the lignin content in a pretreated product derived from a cellulose-containing biomass to not more than 8.5% to promote formation, on the membrane surface, of a cake in which the solid component in the saccharified liquid is concentrated. Collection of the cake formed on the membrane surface allows efficient solid-liquid separation of the saccharified liquid with the microfiltration membrane.
