Abstract: A method for repairing a workpiece (92) using microplasma includes the steps of generating a microplasma stream (21) having a width of about 0.5 millimeters to about 5 millimeters; applying the microplasma stream (21) to a workpiece (92); and coating a portion of the workpiece (92) with the microplasma stream without masking the workpiece (92). One or more quantities of powdered materials (34) entrained in the microplasma stream (21) may be applied to the workpiece without masking the workpiece (92) after applying the first layer.

Abstract: A portable, hand-held microplasma spray coating apparatus comprises an anode (16), a cathode (18) and an arc gas emitter (14) disposed in a housing (13), and a powder feeding system (23), a cooling system (11) and a power source (17) connected to the apparatus. The powder feeding system (23), cooling system (11) and power source (17) are detachably mounted on a mobile platform. The microplasma spray apparatus can be transported to on-site locations in the field to facilitate quick repair work.
