Abstract: A support for a workpiece, in which a hole is to be machined by an energy beam, consists of grains (or particles) binded together by a binder which is evaporated by the beam and partially transforms into a liquid after machining. The grains absorb heat and vapours when contacted by the beam. The compsn. of the support is chosen to ensure absorption of the beam and creation of an amt. of gas sufficient to expel molten metal from the hole and reduce formation of burrs and resolidified layers in the hole. The support is useful in the electron beam machining of holes, slots, etc. in (non)metallic workpieces, e.g. to form a hole in one wall of a hollow gas turbine engine blade.

Abstract: Method and Apparatus for Applying a Polymer Layer to a Metal Sheet Disclosed is a method and fixture for applying a thin layer of polymer material (26) to a piece of wavy sheet metal (24)(34). The sheet (34) is drawn to the smooth surface (42) of a fixture using a vacuum, and polymer (49) is flowed across the surface (51) using a curved leveling board (50) which produces a generally uniform thickness polymer molding. The edges (76) of the layer are molded with a bevel edge by shaped side rails (38) to provide a relief around the edge of the layer. Thus a raised up polymer portion (68) usually occuring at the edge rail (38) location will not interfere with the precise spacing which the layer is intended to produce between the sheet and a cylindrical workpiece holder (20).

Abstract: METHOD FOR PREVENTING BURR FORMATION DURING ELECTRON BEAM DRILLING Disclosed is an electron beam drilling process in which the workpiece surface first penetrated by the beam is coated with a stop-off material having the required high temperature resistance for preventing formation of burrs around the perimeter of the hole from hot molten spatter which is ejected from the entrance to the hole during the drilling operation. A preferred stop-off material is a substantially continuous layer of boron nitride on the first penetrated surface of the workpiece. EH-6310
