    Abstract: Disclosed is an electron beam drilling process in which the workpiece surface first penetrated by the beam is coated with a stop-off material having the required high temperature resistance for preventing formation of burrs around the perimeter of the hole from hot molten spatter which is ejected from the entrance to the hole during the drilling operation. A preferred stop-off material is a substantially continuous layer of boron nitride on the first penetrated surface of the workpiece.

    Abstract: During the drilling of holes of very small diameter in workpieces 24 by means of an electron-beam drilling machine, the material 40 discharged from the workpiece has a great tendency to travel back along the beam path and settle as a deposit 50 in the interior of the electron gun 22. Provision is made for the deposit to settle for the most part in a recess 54 at the margin 60 of a rotatable, inner diaphragm 44 which is arranged near the beam path inside the electron gun. The deflection angle alpha of the electron beam is accurately set so that the material discharged from the workpiece settles in the recess, from which the material is removed by means of a wiper. A nose 64 is arranged in the recess at the margin of the diaphragm and helps to remove small quantities of deposits 50 which are still adhering to the stationary parts of the electron gun near the diaphragm. In this embodiment, an elastically flexible wiper, such as, for example, a wire brush 66, is used in order to remove adhering deposits from the margin of the diaphragm.
