    Abstract: The method of measuring electromagnetic waves emanating from the interior of a melt (3), in particular metal melt, involves blowing gas into the melt (3) to form a gas-filled cavity (26) and observation and evaluation of the electromagnetic waves emitted by the melt (3) through the inblown gas by directing the electromagnetic waves via an optical system (20) to a detector (22) for determining temperature and/or chemical composition. To eliminate spurious measurements, the emitted electromagnetic waves are separated from electromagnetic waves (36, 37, 39, 40) aligned obliquely relative to the optical axis (38) of the optical system (20) and present outside a boundary radius (41) drawn from that optical axis (38). This is done by: deviating these electromagnetic waves from the optical axis (38) in a wave scattering device (42) of the optical system (20) so that only electromagnetic waves aligned more or less parallel to the optical axis (38) of the optical system (20) reach a detector (22) located downstream of the optical system (20); and/or by displacing the optical system (20) and aligning the optical axis (38) of said system relative to the cavity (26) until the intensity of the emitted electromagnetic waves when evaluated reaches a maximum value.

    Abstract: In a process for producing a metal melt, in particular, a steel melt, in an electric arc furnace, the bath surface is covered by a foamed slag during the flat bath period(s). In order to ensure the advantages of an electric arc enveloped by foamed slag over an extended period of time at expenditures as low as possible, level measuring of the layer height of a slag is carried out several times during a furnace heat. Foamed slagenveloping an electric arc generated by at least one electrode is formed by blowing solids, gases or a mixture of solids and gases into or onto the slag or the metal melt. The layer height of the foamed slag is dimensioned such that the foamed slag at least extends over all of the electric arc, a number of advantages, thus, being, utilized to the optimum degree.

    Abstract: In order to profitably process various iron ores having different compositions, a plant for producing iron smelts (24), in particular steel smelts, such as crude steel smelts, has an electric arc furnace vessel (1) and a refiner vessel (3) joined to the furnace vessel (1) by a weir (34). The refiner vessel (3) has an at least partially sloping down bottom, starting from the weir (34), an oxygen supply (35, 36) and an iron smelt discharge aperture (41) arranged in its end area opposite the furnace vessel (1). A decantation vessel (2) follows the furnace vessel (1) and shares therewith a common bottom (18). The end area of the decantation vessel (2) opposite the furnace vessel (1) has a slag discharge aperture (43). A liquid pig iron (20) supply (21) opens into the furnace vessel (1). A solid iron ore (7) preheating shaft (5) arranged above the furnace vessel (1) opens into the furnace vessel (1) through its lid (4) and is closed by a gas-permeable, cooled shut-off device (6). A charging shaft (10) arranged above the furnace vessel (1) opens into the furnace vessel (1) and is closed by a gas-tight, cooled shut-off device.

The second tube is shaped as a Laval nozzle for delivery of oxygen, and surrounds a central tube serving for delivery of solid substances or dust. The fifth tube surrounding the fourth tube forms an annular gap whose discharge channels are directed away from the central longitudinal lance axis.
