Abstract: Embodiments herein measure current/voltage levels of a drive motor when media is in contact with a drive roller so as to determine the drive force imparted by the drive rollers on the media. Then, embodiments herein can reference the predetermined relationship between roller drive force and media/drive roller velocity ratios to determine a difference between the velocity of the drive roller an d the velocity of the media based on the drive force. Once this velocity differenc e is determined, embodiments herein can change the current/voltage levels being applied to the drive motor if the actual velocity of the media is different than the intended velocity of the media so as to correct the velocity of the media. Thus, when referencing the predetermined relationship, embodiments herein produce a velocity ratio correction factor. This velocity ratio correction factor can be applie d continuously during any velocity profile of the drive motor, or it can be us ed to calculate the accumulated error in sheet position and then to apply a correction near the end of the velocity profile.

Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for the use of an optical sensor to determine the position of a printing device relative to a piece of paper or a paper-handling surface. The optical sensor reads marks to detect movement and/or direction of movement or spacing of imprints on the paper. Benefits include swath stitching calibration, color to color registration, producing printing device alignment data and generating information for printing device firing signals. The present invention is applicable to a wide field of printing technologies, including, but not limited to, acoustic ink printing, thermal ink jet printing, piezo ink jet printing, ionographic printing and a variety of other printing technologies involving the need for positioning a printing device relative to a piece of paper.

Abstract: Embodiments according to the present disclosure provide methods and systems of determining nip velocity profiles in a medium registration system (20), including parameterizing a set of equations into a set of standard parameters, the set of equations representing an analytic form of the nip velocity profiles (VA,VB); determining values of the parameters through an iteration process; and determining the nip velocity profiles based on the determined values of the parameters. The embodiments separately provide systems and methods of simulating a medium registration process, including inputting an error parameter (²) to a velocity nominal profile of a nip in a medium registration system; determining an output value of the velocity nominal profile; and using the output value in a regression algorithm to obtain a simulated relationship, the simulated relationship indicative of a manner in which the error parameter influences the output value. The embodiments separately provide systems and methods of determining an angular velocity of a medium (10) relative to a nip in a medium registration system, including determining a path of the nip on the medium; and determining the angular velocity as a function of a position of the nip in the path. The embodiments separately provide systems and methods of controlling nips (NA,NB) of a medium registration system, including wagging a medium relative to a center line of two nips of the medium registration system; and then unwagging the medium relative to the center line of the two nips.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for controlling the transverse registration of an image area to be exposed on a longitudinally moving belt (24; Fig.3) by providing belt edge profile data (12), detecting a lateral position of the belt during movement of the belt by measuring the lateral position of the belt edge, and adjusting (22) the traverse location of the image on the belt to compensate for a difference between the detected lateral belt edge position and the belt edge profile data. In addition, a method and apparatus is provided for controlling the lateral position of a longitudinally moving endless belt by generating a steering command signal by calculating a difference between the detected first lateral position of the belt edge and the belt edge profile data corresponding to the first longitudinal position, and adjusting the lateral position of the belt by steering the belt in response to the steering command.

Abstract: A substrate media registration system in a printing system includes a de-skewing system 132, 134, 136, a reflexive system 150 and a controller 170. The de-skewing system 132, 134, 136 is configured to de-skew substrate media 102. The reflexive system is configured to detect the lateral position of the substrate media 102 and at least one of a lead edge 104 and a trail edge 106 of the substrate media being transported in the process direction 190. The controller 170 is operatively coupled to the reflexive system 150 and is configured to control ejection of ink from a print head system 158 in response to detecting the lateral position of the substrate media and at least one of the lead edge 104 and the trail edge 106 of the substrate media 102. Further the controller selects a subset of print nozzles from which ink is to be ejected based on the detected lateral position of the media 102 and at least one of the lead edge 104 and the trail edge 106 of the substrate media 102.

Abstract: A droplet-on-demand ink jet printer uses electrostatic tacking of a recording medium (24), such as paper, to achieve simultaneously precise holding of an aligned recording medium on a dielectric surface of a transport belt (14), thereby providing precise motion quality of the recording medium relative to the printer's printhead (16), and improved ink droplet placement on the recording medium. The transport belt (14) is electrostatically charged with a charge of one polarity, so that an electrostatic pressure is generated which precisely holds the recording medium (24) in an aligned position on the transport belt (14), after it is fed thereon, and concurrently induces a charge of opposite polarity on the ink droplets (38) ejected by the printhead, thereby accelerating the droplets toward the recording medium. The accelerated droplets (38) reduce transverse forces on the droplets, such as transverse airflows, and placement errors caused by the repulsion of incoming droplets by previously printed images are further reduced by migration of the charges of the printed droplets through the recording medium (24) and consequent charge cancellation, so that droplet placement is improved.

Abstract: A sheet registration system, especially for printers, with a lower cost and lower mass-movement system for both sheet deskewing and transverse registration repositioning of the sheets (12) in the same integral system, especially for higher speed printing. Only one main drive motor (11A) can drive both of the two spaced apart sheet feeding nips (17A,17B), together with a much lower power, and lower cost, deskewing differential drive system (112,32) for providing the relative differential angular movement of the two spaced sheet feeding nips (17A,17B) to achieve the desired amount of sheet deskewing movement, without interrupting the forward feeding movement of the sheet (12). Also disclosed are extensive further reductions in the component mass of the lateral translation movement for lateral sheet registration.
