Abstract: The present invention is a digital printer that comprises the novel combination of a two-dimensional light valve (34), a backlight (36) that illuminates the entire two dimensional light valve, a driver (32) coupled to the light valve (34), the backlight (36) and an outside source (33) of digital image data, an imaging system (38), and a photoreceptor belt (40). The digital data representing the desired image is fed into the driver (32) from an outside source (33). The light valve (34) is then set according to the digital data by the driver. Once the light valve is set, the driver signals the backlight to illuminate the light valve in the manner of a flash exposure. The image (42) produced is then focused by an imaging system onto the surface of a photoreceptor belt (40) - thus exposing and capturing a latent image. In another aspect of the present invention, very compact lenslet arrays are employed in lieu of traditional optics. This reduces the overall space requirements of the presently claimed digital printer - making it readily suitable for desktop application.

Abstract: A method for scheduling transfers in a printing machine (Fig. 2) of the type having a scheduler (162;Fig. 9) communicating with both a first disk (Disk 0) and a second disk (Disk 1), the first and second disks having a combined bandwidth. The method for scheduling comprises the following steps: First, a first transfer (CurrentOp1) to be performed on a first location of the first disk (Disk 0) during a first time interval (tSX1-tDX1) and a second transfer (NextOp 1) to be performed on a second location of the first disk (Disk 0) during a second time interval (tSX2-tDX2) are both scheduled, with the scheduler (162), so that a first time gap interval (tGAPx) exists between the first time interval (tSX1-tDX1) and the second time interval (tSX2-tDX2 ). Second, a third transfer (CurrentOp2) to be performed on a first location of the second disk (Disk 1) during a third time interval (tSY1-tDY1) and a fourth transfer (NextOp2) to be performed on a second location of the second disk (Disk 1) during a fourth time interval (tSY2-tDY2) are both scheduled, with the scheduler (162), so that a second time gap interval (tGAPy) exists between the third time interval (tSY1-tDY1) and the fourth time interval (tSY2-tDY2). Finally, a fifth transfer (InsertOp) to be performed during a fifth interval (tSI-tDI) is scheduled, with the scheduler (162), so that the fifth interval (tSI-tDI) occurs during either the first time gap interval (tGAPx) or the second time gap interval (tGAPy) in a manner that maximizes the combined bandwidth of the first (Disk 0) and second (Disk 1) disk.

Abstract: The present invention includes a plurality of input/output processors communicating with a master processor. Each of the input/output processors has a filtering mechanism to filter the inputs before transmission tothe master over the communication channel precluding the necessity of filtering at the master. More importantly, the shared communications system is not loaded down with every change of an input. Because of this feature, only meaningful changes are put on the communication line, thus substantially reducing its load which makes its effective response time stay high. The inputs when received at the master can be immediately handled to improve the central processor response time. Two types of filtering are provided, in particular, transition and debounce filtering to respond to switch and sensor inputs. Also, there is provided a means to programmably select the type of filter and the time period of filtering.

Abstract: The present invention is a multiprocessor machine control system in which the failure of one of the processors to reset can be ignored by the rest of the control system. In particular, a software crash or other abnormality on one of the processors will generate a reset procedure. If the processor cannot be reset, this will indicate a processor board failure such as a hardware failure. If the processor and its controlled elements are not crucial to the machine operation, then the control will ignore the failed processor as though it were not in the control system, and continue with machine operation.

Abstract: The present invention provides RAM locations in a main processor to store the inputs from other input/output processors. Thus, inputs to an input/output processor are also conveyed over a communication channel to the main processor and stored in the main processor's RAM. All control functions or processors needing a particular input value or responding to certain input values, would look to the input values stored in the master processor memory rather than in the local input/output processor. Inputs to any particular input/output processor or control code relying on the inputs can then be shifted to other processors. This would not effect the control since the control responds to the inputs centrally located in the master processor RAM.

Abstract: The system displays an appropriate two digit fault code if a predetermined push button on the operator keyboard is pressed while a status code is displayed. When the push button is released, the display returns to the status code. The fault codes identify sources of malfunctions rather than status code remedies for efficient fault diagnosis and correction. In a preferred embodiment, there are approximately ninety fault codes available for display covering recirculating document, machine processor, finisher and special occurrence faults. The capturing of the fault is independent of any clearance. Thus, even after the machine has been restored to a Ready status or cleared of status codes, the most recent first or highest priority fault is displayable.
