    Abstract: A multiple sheet detecting system for use in a sheet feed path to provide a signal to a machine control when superposed sheets are fed past a detection station. The detection system has a source of illumination and photosensitive elements at the detection station. Illumination is interrupted by the presence of a sheet or sheets in the sheet path and also by a sample sheet such that a comparison is made between the sample and fed sheets. An electronic circuit coupled to the photosensitive elements which experience a change in resistance depending upon the transmittance of a sheet or sheets in the sheet path generates an output signal when there is a multiple sheet condition. The circuit may be calibrated for varying circuit parameters to accommodate different sheet weights and types.

    Abstract: A multiple-sheet-detecting system for use in a sheet feed path to provide signals to a machine control to indicate when superposed sheets are fed past a detection station. The detection system has a light source and photosensor located on opposite sides of the sheet path such that the illumination reaching the photosensor is interrupted by the presence of a sheet or sheets in the sheet path. An electronic circuit is coupled to the photosensor which experiences a change in resistance depending upon the transmittance of a sheet or sheets in the sheet path and provides an output signal when there is a multiple sheet condition. The electronic circuit includes a motor-driven potentiometer which is utilized as a memory for a previously fed sheet in a feedback circuit for comparison with a signal representative of the next sheet. The circuit may be calibrated for varying circuit parameters to accommodate different sheet weights and types.

    Abstract: A sheet stacking system is described herein which comprises an array of sheet stacking bins (11, 11a, 11b) for stacking a plurality of printed substrate sheets, a sheet feeding input path system for feeding selected sheets into a selected bin (11, 11a, 11b) to form a stack (51) therein, a bin fullness indicator system for indicating that the stack (51) has reached a preset allowable maximum, and a stacking control system (50), controlled by the bin fullness indicator system, to control the sheet feeding input path. The bin fullness indicator system includes a single stack height sensing system for measuring the stack height. A movable carriage system is employed for moving this single stack height sensing system from one bin to another to measure the stack height in respective ones of the bins (11, 11a, 11b). The stack height sensor includes a movable sensing element which is extended into an adjacent bin to detect the stack height therein. A signal generator is responsive to the sensing element position to provide control signals for the stacking control system.
