Abstract: A method for the selection of proper colors (12) for individual wearers dependin g upon the underlying color of the skin of the wearer and the intensity therefor. The method includes the steps of providin g a group of classifications of color temperature, preferably four in number, and using a spectrophotometer, or a draping technique of material to determine the color temperatures of the skin of the user, and a determination of the classification in which thos e color temperatures fall is made. A predetermined group of colors (12) are classified within each category, so that upon determina tion of the proper classification for an individual user, reference may be made to the proper predetermined group of colors (12) as a guide for appropriate apparel, cosmetic makeup, or hair tint selection.

Abstract: Un método y aparato para determinar la condicion de un sujeto de prueba en base al color utilizando un instrumento de medicion de color, para detectar el cambio de un factor de color indicativo de una condicion tal como una enfermedad, daño, envejecimiento, etc.. Puede detectarse una condicion médica tal como la hiperbilirubinemia, que afecta el color de la piel. Uno valora los factores de color tal como Hunter b y L en el color de la piel de los sujetos. Para rangos predeterminados de un factor de color, en particular L, los cambios en el otro factor de color, por ejemplo Hunter b, arriba de los niveles predeterminados, son indicativos de la condicion médica. En muchos casos, una sola medicion de los factores de color, puede utilizarse como una advertencia de la probabilidad de la condicion médica o contaminada, si el rango ordinario de los factores de color se conoce para individuos saludables, con coloracion de la piel similar a aquellas del sujeto de prueba. Aun si no existe medicion de línea basal y el color del sujeto de prueba es tal, que una sola lectura de uno o dos factores de color no advierten de la posible presencia de la condicion médica o contaminacion, las lecturas secuenciales pueden indicar la presencia o ausencia de la condicion en base a los cambios en el factor de color medido, o carecer de cambios. Las técnicas de medicion de color se aplican a un amplio rango de sujetos de prueba biologica (por ejemplo cabello, dientes, tejido, excreciones, alimentos, suelo, animales, plantas).

The color measuring techniques apply to a wide range of biological test subjects (e.g. hair, teeth, tissue, excretions, foods, soil, animals, plants).

Abstract: Skin coloration categories are identified based upon opponent color underton es of the skin. For example, using a color measuring device (10), Hunter b value is developed from measures of blue, yellow and l ightness. That value alone then determines which of seve ral categories of skin coloration a subject's skin exhibits. Category selection is made by comparison of measured Hunter b with ranges o f Hunter b values of skin color categories. Instrumentation includes the color measuring device (10), a central processing unit (15), memory (17), and an output device. The skin color Hunter b is calculated and compar ed to stored ranges to assign a category which is then d isplayed on the output device. Colors compatible with skin color categories are ident ified or formulated based upon broad color family design ation, yellow, brown, red, etc., and a comparison of measured and stored ranges of known or specifically developed color characteristics fo r the particular family.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for calibrating a color measuring instrument with a color standard and verifying the color standard and calibration are provided. One method includes providing a color standard having a surface with at least two different colors (preferably arranged for a simultaneous color measurement), calibrating the instrument, and verifying that said color standard is an authorized color standard of a predetermined specification and that the calibration of the color measuring instrument has achieved predetermined specified results. Some of the provided methods and apparatus use a photosensitive portion of the color standard that changes color in a known way when exposed to a predetermined dose of light. Various color standards for use with this invention are provided.
