Abstract:
Catalysts and processes are described to make low molecular weight, essentially terminally-unsaturated, viscous poly(1-olefin) or copoly(1-olefin) having a high terminal vinylidine content from a feed stock containing one or more 1-olefin and other volatile hydrocarbon liquids using a Ziegler catalyst made from a Group IVb metallocene and an aluminoxane cocatalyst, particularly bis(cyclopentadienyl) and bis(indenyl) titanium(IV), zirconium(IV) or hafnium(IV) compounds and methylaluminoxane. A particularly useful feed stock is a refinery stream containing 1-olefins and isobutylene which is used to make polyisobutylene. The reactive, essentially terminally-unsaturated, viscous poly(1-olefin) or copoly(1-olefin) can be functionalized to make a number of products useful as sealants, petroleum additives, adhesives, and the like by reacting the terminal vinylidine linkage with an aromatic, an epoxidation agent, a silylation agent, maleic anhydride, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, hydrogen, a halogen, a hydrohalogen, and the like.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for directing and converging pumping radiation through a lasing medium as a beam of pumping radiation to shape the beam as a means of distributing the concentration of energy of the pumping radiation transmitted through the lasing medium in order to provide minimal optical damage to the pumping radiation input surface for the lasing medium while maintaining maximum laser gain.

Methods and apparatus for propagating robust scanning signals for pixel addressing operations and isolation of an image signal from the pixel addressing operations in optoelectronic image transducers to reduce complexity and improve image fidelity.
Abstract:
An olefins process is described which combines cracking of a hydrocarbon feedstock with the coupling of methane using an oxygen-affording gas such that the heat evolved in the exothermic methane coupling reaction is effectively transferred to the endothermic cracking process in a manner which does not allow the non-hydrocarbon products in the effluent of the methane coupling reaction to mix with the effluent of the cracking process. By combining the cryogenic requirements of the two processes, the refrigeration used in air liquifaction to separate oxygen for the methane coupling process can provide refrigerant nitrogen to liquify one or more of methane, ethylene and propylene which can be used in the cryogenic separation of the C2+ hydrocarbon products in the cracking process effluent.

An optical glass fiber coated with a protective layer of photocurable polyimide coating which can be prepared from the polymeric condensation product of 6FDA, DMDE, and a photosensitizing moiety. More particularly, the present invention relates to a photocurable polyimide coated glass fiber useful for optic applications.
Abstract:
A catalyst or catalyst component for the polymerization or copolymerization of alpha-olefins in the slurry phase is formed by a process comprising forming a solution of a magnesium-containing species in a liquid and precipitating solid particles from the solution of the magnesium-containing species by treatment with a transisition metal halide in the presence of at least one of a tetrabutoxysilane and a tetrabutoxytitanate.
Abstract:
A solar panel for use in a roof mounted array of solar panels, each panel having ridges protruding outwardly and adjacent to the side edges for receiving a standing seam cap between side-adjacent panels. Each solar panel is formed as an integral structure having a photovoltaic module an edge of which is sealed by a base substrate. The base substrate is configured to have lipped top and bottom edges which interlock to form a watertight seal between top-adjacent and bottom-adjacent solar panels. The solar panel array can be mounted on a roof, in place of shingles or the like, to provide environmental protection for the interior of a building.
Abstract:
Methods for improving the sensitivity of hybridization assays which reduce non-specific binding (NSB) and non-specific hybridization (NSH) are disclosed. The methods include a washing method utilizing tetraalkylammonium salts at high temperatures, and release methods in which a probe-target complex is released from a solid support and recaptured. Use of both the washing and release methods results in substantial reduction in NSB and NSH without performing several rounds of release and recapture of the target nucleic acids.
Abstract:
A process is described to make a dihydroxydiphenol sulfone product with a 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenol sulfone purity in excess of 90 wt. % by reaction of phenol and concentrated sulfuric acid in a solvent mixture containing a lower-boiling and a higher-boiling hydrocarbon, removal by azeotropic distillation of water, hydrocarbon, and phenol, phase separation of the distillate, and return of at least the phenol to the reaction at a rate which maintains a phenol to sulfuric acid mol ratio in the reaction of at least 2 to 1.
