Abstract:
The top foil (12) of a hydrodynamic fluid film thrust bearing (10) is formed from a single flat annular disk with radial depressions (30) extending from the outer diameter to the inner diameter of the disk that protrude toward the foil plate (16) and define between adjacent depressions a working surface (39) that is configured to complement the foil bumpers (14) attached to the foil plate. The bump foils of the upper foil plate and the bump foils of the lower foil plates can be either in axial alignment or can be displaced relative to each other. When the two sets of bump foils are displaced, the leading edge (31) of the upper bump foils is disposed upstream (relative to the direction of the air stream entering the bump foils) of the leading edge (33) of the lower bump foils.

A single polarization fiber and/or amplifier includes a non-polarization preserving fiber (10) having a fiber grating tap (12) which has a predetermined length and strength ( DELTA n/n) and is oriented at a predetermined angle theta and has a grating spacing D so as to couple-out of the fiber (10) a predetermined amount of one polarization (24) over a predetermined wavelength range of an input light (16) and pass the other polarization (28) as output light (26), the grating length being substantially the length of the fiber (10). Alternatively, all or a portion of the fiber (10) may be doped to form a polarization sensitive optical amplifier.

Abstract:
A turbine shroud segment for use in a gas turbine engine includes a serpentine channel along at least one axial edge of the segment. Various construction details are developed that disclose a channel for efficiently flowing cooling fluid through an axial edge of a shroud segment. In a particular embodiment, a turbine shroud segment includes a leading edge serpentine channel having a bend passage which includes a purge hole to avoid separating flow in the bend passage.
Abstract:
Molybdenum alloys are provided with enhanced oxidation resistance. The alloys are prepared by the addition of silicon and boron in amounts defined by the area of a ternary system phase diagram bounded by the points Mo-1.0 % Si-0.5 % B, Mo-1.0 % Si-4.0 % B, Mo-4.5 % Si-0.5 % B, and Mo-4.5 % Si-4.0 B. The resultant alloys have mechanical properties similar to other high temperature molybdenum alloys while possessing a greatly enhanced resistance to oxidation at high temperature. A variety of alloying elements are added to the base composition to modify the alloy properties.
Abstract:
Electronic circuitry is disclosed for interfacing with a plurality of two-position switches to determine if each switch is opened, closed or faulty to some extent. Each switch is connectable in series with a pull-up resistor and between two different voltage values. The switch provides an output voltage at the connection of one terminal of the switch with the pull-up resistor. This switch voltage is presented to both an inverting input of a first comparator and a non-inverting input of a second comparator. The non-inverting input of the first comparator has a reference voltage of a certain value applied thereto, while the inverting input of the second comparator has a reference voltage of a certain value also applied thereto, the reference voltage values being different so as to define a "window" or "dead band" region of voltage. The switch output voltage is compared to the reference voltages on the two comparators. If the switch is closed, the comparator outputs will assume certain states. On the other hand, if the switch is opened, the comparator outputs will assume the opposite states. Finally, if the switch is faulty such that a finite impedance value is developed across the terminals of the switch, the voltage value will then be generated which causes both comparator outputs to assume the same state, thereby indicating a faulty switch to subsequent signal processing circuitry.
Abstract:
Bulkhead (14) is conical and therefor the surface of bulkhead liners (30) has a curved or arcuate surface. Raised lip (70) with planar surface (72) is adjacent and surrounded in each opening (20). Fuel nozzle guide (24) may be rotated against and sealed to the surface of the liner segments.
Abstract:
Cooling air flow from behind bulkhead liner segments (30) and from behind float wall panels (42) is guided as flow (50) over the hot surface of the bulkhead liner segments by fairing (44). The fairing is secured between a shell (38, 40) and a float wall panel (42), and being of equal and coincident length as the panel, may be replaced with the removal of only one panel.
Abstract:
When second shell section (18) diverges with respect to first shell section (16), the second liner panel (50) is located with a changing spacing from the shell. The liner is close to the shell at the upstream edge (68), and farther from the liner at the downstream end (57). The downstream end of the first liner panel (64) overlaps the second liner panel (50) on the gas side.
Abstract:
A welding system includes an imaging system that takes frame by frame pictures of a weld puddle. The imaging system is located in the weld torch. From the images puddle length and width are determined. The length and width are applied against stored membership functions that cover a range of different weld current characteristics and the degree of membership of each dimension in those functions is determined, producing an alpha factor for each membership function. This provides a fuzzy current requirement. Stored values for moment and area for each membership function are multiplied by the alpha for the respective function. The total of the moments is divided by the total of the areas to produce a desired weld current. The weld head includes a weld wire feeder that is driven by a servo by which the wire can be fed along either side of the weld joint. The wire feeder is gear driven in such a way that it does not interfere with the optics in the weld torch. The optics include a strobe to illuminate the puddle. Signal processing includes a process for interpolating the puddle centerline from the range in puddle widths over successive strobed images of the puddle. The head is positioned automatically over the centerline.
Abstract:
A fiber laser (26) including a rare-earth doped fiber laser cavity (32) delimited by a pair of reflective elements (28, 30), such as Bragg gratings, is tuned by compressing the cavity (32) and the gratings (28, 30). Because an optical fiber is much stronger under compression than in tension, the laser (26) is tunable over a much broader range than conventional tension/stretching techniques.
