Alkaline lubricants for use with glass, aluminum and PET containers and other articles of manufacture are prepared from water-soluble amines. Fatty acid lubricants prepared herefrom are rendered highly dilutable by employing myristic acid as at least a portion of the fatty acid component thereof. Synthetic diamine lubricants are prepared by using the water soluble amines as the hydrotrope for the synthetic diamine, without the neutralization thereof.

Contact of acid or alkaline cleaned aluminum surfaces, particularly cans, with a water based composition containing a combination of (A) water-soluble ethoxylated organic material selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated fatty acids, salts of ethoxylated fatty acids, ethoxylated alcohols having at least 4 carbon atoms and containing up to 20 moles of condensed ethylene oxide per mole of alcohol, ethoxylated alkyl alcohol phosphate ester, and mixtures thereof; and (B) an amount of hydrogen peroxide effective to prevent deterioration of the composition by the action of microorganisms, gives the surface after drying lowered surface friction without loss of high quality printability and lacquer adhesion and removes any brown spotting on the cans that may have developed during the cleaning or post-cleaning rinses. The cans after treatment are substantially free from any water breaks when rinsed with water. The foaming resistance and storage stability of the water based composition may be advantageously increased by adding a combination of liquid paraffin, solid wax, and a high molecular weight fatty acid derivative(s) as antifoam agent.

There is provided a galvanized steel sheet with high press formability, which has an inorganic compound on a metallic galvanized layer thereof. The galvanized steel sheet according to the present invention is manufactured by bringing the plating surface of the galvanized steel sheet into contact with a water solution containing 0.1 wt% or more of a borate of alkaline metal, and then drying the steel sheet by heating within a temperature range of 60 to 400 DEG C. The friction coefficient of the galvanized steel sheet of the invention is 80% or less of the friction coefficient obtained without the existence of the inorganic compound on the metallic galvanized layer and the amount of insoluble slimes of the inorganic compound left after water washing or alkali degreasing is less than 1 mg/m .

A metal working process employs a metal working fluid which is water-based and which is one of neutral and basic, the metal working fluid including a corrosion inhibitor in an amount ranging from 0.1 to 10% by weight; a lubricant selected from the group consisting of mono- or dicarboxylic acids or esters thereof having more than 10 carbon atoms, organic phosphate esters containing one or two hydrocarbon groups having 6-18 carbon atoms, and nonionic alkylene oxide adducts having a molecular weight above 400, and mixtures thereof; and an antimicrobially active amount towards fungi and bacteria of at least one alkanolamine compound having the following general formula (I) wherein R is an acyclic hydrocarbon group having 8-14 carbon atoms, A is an hydroxyalkyl group having 2-4 carbon atoms, and X is one of hydrogen. The at least one alkanolamine compound prevents microbial degradation of water-based fluids when included therein.
