Abstract:
Abstract:
A connecting rod (12) is fitted with metallic sliding bearings (22, 26) which are bonded to the connecting rod (12). The bond is achieved without the application of heat to either the connecting rod (12) or the bearings (22, 26) by adhesive bonding or magnetic pulse welding. The same technique can be employed for bonding sliding bearings to other support structures, such as bonding journal bearing to an engine block.
Abstract:
New and improved automobile and light truck components are disclosed. Specifically, certain components traditionnally made from steel, sometimes hardened steel, such as cylinder liners, various valve train components, clutch discs, brake rotors and brake caliper pistons can now be made from aluminum based materials, thereby saving considerable weight. An aluminum/aluminum nitride metal matrix composite material is provided on the contacting or wear surfaces to provide adequate abrasion resistance, yet protect the engaging component from being excessively worn. The metal matrix composite layer can be applied to an aluminum based metal matrix composite substrate or to an unreinforced aluminum substrate. The A1/A1N surface is also easier to machine than most metal matrix composite materials.

Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a cylinder block comprising one or more cylinders, the or each cylinder being adapted to receive a piston therein, the method comprising making a cylinder liner by squeeze casting, in an aluminium-silicon alloy produced from a melt consisting essentially of the following composition by weight: Silicon 14 % to 16 %; Copper 1.9 % to 2.2 %; Nickel 1.0 % to 1.4 %; Magnesium 0.4 % to 0.55 %; Iron 0.6 % to 1.0 %; Manganese 0.3 % to 0.6 %; Silicon Modifier 0.02 % to 0.1 %, with the balance being aluminium and any avoidable impurities, the cylinder liner having an essentially eutectic microstructure containing not more than 10 % primary alpha-aluminium dendrites and being substantially free from intermetallic particles exceeding 10 mu in diameter, placing the cylinder block in a mould and casting therearound an aluminium alloy to provide a main cylinder block body with the cylinder liner entrapped therein.
Abstract:
For a process for the breaking separation of the bearing cap of a multi-part bearing arrangement, especially in internal combustion engine crank-cases by means of a half-mandrel in a bearing bore (20) partly bounded by the bearing cap (4) to separate integrally formed securing flanges of the bearing cap (4) from the remainder (3) of the bearing arrangement, it is proposed in order to produce breaking separation surfaces (14, 15) in facing planes that the pairs of corresponding breaking separation surfaces of the bearing cap and the remainder of the bearing arrangement be provided in separation surfaces together forming a blunt angle ( alpha ) with the apex on the case side by at least one half-mandrel (12), the radius of curvature of which, depending on the actual blunt angle ( alpha ), is 0.5 to 5 % smaller than the constant radius of the bearing bore (20) accepting the half-mandrel (12).
