Abstract: Techniques for scheduling flows and links for transmission are described. Each link is an oriented source-destination pair and carries one or more flows. Each flow may be associated with throughput, delay, feedback (e.g., acknowledgments (ACKs)) and/or other requirements. A serving interval is determined for each flow based on the requirements for the flow. A serving interval is determined for each link based on the serving intervals for all of the flows sent on the link. Each link is scheduled for transmission at least once in each serving interval, if system resources are available, to ensure that the requirements for all flows sent on the link are met. The links are also scheduled in a manner to facilitate closed loop rate control. The links are further scheduled such that ACKs for one or more layers in a protocol stack are sent at sufficiently fast rates.

Abstract: Techniques for sending a message for random access by a user equipment (UE) are described. In an aspect, the UE may send the message on a control channel for random access and may send a reserved channel identifier to indicate the message being sent on the control channel. In another aspect, the UE may send the message in a protocol data unit (PDU) and may send additional information (e.g., a buffer status report) in the PDU if it can accommodate the additional information. In yet another aspect, the UE may generate a short message authentication code for integrity protection (MAC-I) for the message. The short MAC-I may have a smaller size and may be used to authenticate the UE. In yet another aspect, the UE may send a UE ID of one of multiple types for random access and may convey the UE ID type via a format field in the message.

Abstract: The method and apparatus as described are directed toward techniques and mechanisms to improve efficiency in wireless communication networks through optimization of handover scenarios. Determining whether an intra-base station or inter-node-B handover is too performed, and determining the protocol layers to reset during the handover based at least in part on the type of handover to be performed increases the overall efficiency of the wireless network.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate efficiently communicating a data packet related to a protocol layer within a wireless communication system. The systems and/or methods can provide cross-layer optimization by directly transporting or communicating data to a particular protocol layer. In general, a MAC header can include data that indicates a protocol layer to which such data is directed or targeted. The MAC header can allow a portion of data (e.g., PDUs, SDUs, etc.) to bypass at least one protocol layer above the MAC protocol layer for efficient and optimized processing of such data.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for a learning-based determination of se mi-persistent scheduling of data-packet flow wireless communication. A packe tized data flow served to a wireless terminal is fully scheduled for an init ial period of time in order to collect statistics associated with scheduled packet sizes (Ss) and inter-packet times (Ts). Analysis of a cumulative dist ribution of {S, T} pairs indicate whether a characteristic packet size (S0) and size dispersion (D0) are associated with the cumulative distribution. In ter-time intervals associated with the characteristic size and dispersion co mplete a transport format. Semi-persistent scheduling is utilized for a pack etized flow when a characteristic transport format can be extracted, or lear ned, from the accumulated statistics. Extracted transport formats can be emp loyed to optimize scheduling efficiency upon handover.

Abstract: A data packet communication system employs radio link control (RLC) trans mission between a transmitter and a receiver with an Automatic Repeat Reques t (ARQ) arrangement whereby polling of the receiver is accomplished with red uced amount of redundantly transmitted data, such as between an access node and terminal. Upon a polling event, such as emptying of a transmission buffe r of the transmitter, expiration of a polling timer, or reaching a radio lin k control (RLC) protocol data units (PDUs) count threshold, the transmitter sends a polling command to the receiver. This polling command is smaller tha n any of the RLC PDUs by resegmenting to a variably sized PDU sending a redu ced amount of data. With evolving communication standards tending toward lar ger PDUs, such as in excess of a kilobyte for HSPA+ (High-Speed Packet Acces s Evolution) and 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution), this inefficiency can be of increasing impact.
