Abstract:
The present invention concerns methods of treating systemic, regional, or local inflammation from a patient suffering or at risk of inflammation comprising administration of a therapeutically effective dose of a sorbent that sorbs an inflammatory mediator in said patient. In some preferred embodiments, the sorbent is a biocompatible organic polymer.
Abstract:
The present invention relate to three dimensional porous polysaccharide matrices able to induce mineralisation of a tissue in osseous site, as well as in non-osseous site, in the absence of stem cells or growth factors.
Abstract:
There are provided methods of producing a component incorporating a bioactive material. In one embodiment the method comprises: (a) using a screw extruder to mix a polymeric material (I) with a bioactive material (II) and melt the polymeric material (I); and (b) making a component by moulding; and wherein the polymeric material (I) is of a type which includes: (i) phenyl moieties; (ii) ketone moieties; and (iii) ether moieties. Also provided are components comprising a polymeric material and a bioactive material.

The present invention relate to three dimensional porous polysaccharide matrices able to induce mineralisation of a tissue in osseous site, as well as in non-osseous site, in the absence of stem cells or growth factors.
Abstract:
The present invention refers to a porous PEEK-type polymer article comprising a porous PEEK-type polymer structure and presenting at least a trimodal pore distribution. The invention describes a process for the production of said porous PEEK-type polymer article comprising: a) contacting a PEEK-type polymer with a composition comprising at least a organic solvent, b) heating at a temperature at which the PEEK-type polymer is dissolved, c) adding at least a porogen agent, d) cooling the mixture obtained in c) at a temperature at least equal or lower than the temperature at which the PEEK-type polymer precipitates, e) forming said cooled mixture into a shaped article, f) removing the organic solvent and the porogen agent, and g) recovering the PEEK-type polymer article.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of preparing porous solids, which method comprises polymerizing, in a salt melt or a eutectic mixture of salt melt containing at least one Lewis acidic salt, cyano monomers having at least two cyano groups in their molecule, wherein the at least two cyano groups are bonded to a rigid linking group in the cyano monomer, as well as to the porous solids obtainable by that method. Owing to their porosity and the associated extremely high specific surface area, the porous solids are useful as sorbent, filtering and insulating materials, as well as catalyst carriers.
Abstract:
Devices formed of or including biocompatible polyhydroxylkanoates are provided with controlled degradation rates, preferably less than one year under physiological conditions. Preferred devices include sutures, suture fasteners, meniscus repair devices, rivets, tacks, staples, screws (including interference screws), bone plates and bone plating system, surgical mesh, repair patches, slings, cardiovascular patches, orthopedic pins (including bone filling augmentation material), adhesion barriers, stents, guided tissue repair/regeneration devices, articular cartilage repair devices, nerve guides, tendon repair devices, atrial septal defect repair devices, pericardial patches, bulking and filling agents, vein valves, bone marrow scaffolds, meniscus regeneration devices, ligament and tendon grafts, ocular cell implants, spinal fusion cages, skin substitutes, dural substitutes, bone graft substitutes, bone dowels, wound dressings, and hemostats. The polyhydroxyalkanoates can contain additives, be formed of mixtures of monomers or include pendant groups or modifications in their backbones, or can be chemically modified, all to alter the degradation rates. The polyhydroxyalkanoate compositions also provide favorable mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and degradation times within desirable time frames under physiological conditions.
Abstract:
The present invention provides for concentrated aqueous silk fibroin solutions and an all-aqueous mode for preparation of concentrated aqueous fibroin solutions that avoids the use of organic solvents, direct additives, or harsh chemicals. The invention further provides for the use of these solutions in production of materials, e.g., fibers, films, foams, meshes, scaffolds and hydrogels.
Abstract:
The invention discloses a method for manufacturing alveolate cellulose products (sponges, sponge-cloths...), from a cellulose raw material, which comprises: dissolving at least partially the said cellulose raw material in an intrinsic solvent; incorporating, under agitation, into the resulting mixture an effective amount of at least one pore forming agent; the said pore forming agent(s), compatible with the cellulose mixture, being suitable for generating, when their action develops, a macro- and a microporosity; gelling the consistent homogeneous mass thus obtained; treating the said gelled mass under conditions where the dissolved cellulose precipitates and the action of the pore forming agent(s) present develops. The said method is an advantageous alternative to the polluting viscose method. The products obtained have properties quite similar to those of the products obtained by the said viscose method. The said new products are part of the invention.
Abstract:
A porous polysulfone membrane and process for the preparation of porous polysulfone media suitable for use in filtration comprises blending polysulfone with a particulate solid or with said particulate solid and a second polymer, extruding the resultant blend to form an article and leaching the particulate solid and second polymer from the article.
