A solid lubricant composition comprises (I) 30 to 70 parts by weight of graphite, (II) 70 to 30 parts by weight of a mixture of at least two components selected from alkali molybdate, alkali or alkaline earth sulphate and alkali phosphate, the ratio of the two individual ingredients being in the range of from 0.05/1 to 20/1. Compositions give improved load-bearing capacity and allows settling of friction coefficient.

In one aspect the invention is a carrier-free pulverulent metalworking lubricant containing a resin having a highly polar functional group, and in another aspect is a method of the invention of forging a workpiece in a die which includes the step of applying to at least one of the die and the workpiece a coating of an effective amount of the carrier-free pulverulent lubricant composition. The use of the composition and method of the invention significantly reduces smoke and oily waste generation in hot forging operations by eliminating the use of oils or volatile organic compounds as carriers, while providing acceptable performance, cleanability, and sprayability.

A novel lubrication blend useful per se as a lubricant or as an additive to form a novel lubricant composition. The lubrication blend consists essentially of a mixture of: (1) at least one complex sulfide of antimony, represented by the formula: Sb x S y wherein, x is a number in the range from about 1.7 to about 2.3, and y is a number in the range from about 3.6 to about 4.4, (2) at least one antimony oxide, and (3) at least one lamellar crystalline solid lubricant.

Abstract:
A solid lubricant combination comprising (a) 25 to 65 parts by weight graphite, (b) 15 to 45 parts by weight zinc sulfide, (c) 5 to 20 parts by weight antimony (III) sulfide, and (d) 5 to 20 parts by weight of an alkali earth metal phosphate, or other inorganic metal phosphate or mixtures of such phosphates which are commonly known as solid lubricants, is described. The solid lubricant combination is especially suitable as an additive to friction linings and results in an improvement in their tribological properties.
