    Abstract: An image-reading apparatus and method for controlling the image-reading apparatus including a document plate where an original document is placed, a line image sensor that reads an image on the document plate by scanning to obtain image data, a reference-setting image that is placed outside a region of the document plate at a position where the line image sensor is able to read the reference-setting image, and a control unit configured to set a reference position when the image sensor reads the image, wherein the control unit detects the reference-setting image from the image data and, depending on a power-on state of the image-reading apparatus, selects the manner in which the reference position is set based on the reference-setting image.

    Abstract: According to aspects of the embodiments, there is provided an apparatus that includes a calibration member that is disposed within a calibration holder and is movable to a position within the optical path of the scanner head assembly. The apparatus can perform optical analysis of images on sheets, comprising a structure forming a baffle for passage of a sheet therethrough, and a photosensor disposed to receive light reflected from a sheet in the baffle. In particular, this embodiment employs a shutter plate mounted to a rack and pinion system where the shutter plate serves the dual purpose of presenting the calibration member to the scanner when engaged into the paper path and when retracted, the backside of the shutter serves as a paper guide.

    Abstract: An image scanning apparatus includes an image scanning unit that reads an image from an original sheet by scanning an image-formed surface of the original sheet with light in a main-scanning direction and converting light reflected from the image-formed surface into electricity using a photoelectric conversion element; a shading correction unit that performs shading correction on an image signal created by reading the image from the original sheet; a white member that faces a scanning surface of the image scanning unit; and a reference-white-data creating unit that creates reference white data for the shading correction by scanning a surface of the white member using the image scanning unit; and an interval controlling unit that decreases an interval between a scanning surface of the image scanning unit and a surface of the white member when the reference-white-data creating unit creates the referential white data.

    Abstract: A carriage motor which is a heat generating device is arranged next to a CIS in a scanner unit. The carriage motor drives respective transport rollers of an ADF unit via a gear system as well. The scanner unit makes a white reference board be read so as to obtain white reference data, and obtains black reference data more frequently than the white reference data, e.g., in a continuous process for reading a document. As a CIS module continues a reading process, the black reference data changes as being affected by a change in temperature in the CIS module, etc. The scanner unit deals with such a change in the black reference data by obtaining the black reference data more frequently.

    Abstract: A document reading apparatus includes a document positioning plate configured to position a document, a carriage configured to move a light source along the document positioning plate, a reading unit configured to read an image of a document illuminated by a light source of the carriage, a white reference member provided in the displacement range of the carriage, an input unit configured to input a reading start instruction for a document, and a control unit configured to move the carriage along the document positioning plate in response to a reading start instruction input via the input unit. The control unit moves the carriage to a first position at which the white reference member is provided, cause the reading unit to read the white reference member, moves the carriage to a second position that is an acceleration start position for accelerating toward the reading start position of the document positioning plate, and waits for a reading start instruction input from the input unit.

    Abstract: A calibration mechanism is positioned in a scanning device having a scanning module for scanning a document. The scanning module defines a scanning line perpendicular to a scanned area of the document. The calibration mechanism includes a calibration unit, a supporting unit supporting the calibration unit, and a driving unit. The calibration unit is positioned to face the scanning module and aligned with the scanning line. The driving unit drives the calibration unit to move close to the scanning module and away from the scanning module along the scanning line. The scanning module obtains great brightness value by scanning the calibration unit, if the calibration unit is close to the scanning module. The scanning module obtains small brightness value by scanning the calibration unit, if the calibration unit is far from the scanning module.
