    Abstract: Laurolactam is prepared by: (a) reacting cyclododecatriene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst mixture consisting of (i) an oxonation catalyst and (ii) a hydrogenation catalyst which is not poisoned by carbon monoxide, to form a mixture of hydroxymethylcyclododecane and bis-(cyclododecylmethyl) ether; (b) dehydrogenating this mixture in an alkali melt to form cyclododecane carboxylic acid; and (c) nitrosating this by a conventional method with a mixture of nitrosylsulphuric acid and oleum and rearranging the product into laurolactam. In modifications, the mixture from step (a) is separated into its components, e.g. by distillation, and only the hydroxymethylcyclododecane is subjected to step (b). The resulting cyclododecane carboxylic acid is then subjected to step (c) alone or with the ether product separated after step (a). Catalyst (i) preferably comprises a Co compound, a Pd compound or finely divided Pd. Suitable catalysts (ii) include those containing Cu (II) oxide and chromium oxide; Pt or Ag/Zn/Cr oxides.ALSO:A catalyst mixture comprising dicobalt octacarbonyl and a hydrogenation catalyst prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of Cu (NO3)2, Na2Cr2O7 and NH3, filtering, washing and drying at 320-330 DEG C, is used to prepare a mixture of hydroxymethyl-cyclododecane and bis(cyclododecylmethyl) ether by reacting cyclododecatriene with CO and H2.

    Abstract: Caprolactam is prepared by nitrosation of cyclohexyl derivatives having one tertiary carbon atom in the cyclohexyl ring, including hexahydrobenzoic acid, the functional derivatives of said acid, cyclohexyl aryl ketones and dicyclohexyl ketone, in a process in which the cyclohexyl derivative is continuously fed into a reactor, subjected to vigorous stirring in said reactor, and is nitrosated by a one-step process, cyclohexane being continuously fed into said reactor and caused to boil there substantially at atmospheric pressure, whereby the temperature of the reaction is maintained near to the boiling temperature of cyclohexane at atmospheric pressure, cyclohexane being continuously withdrawn, whereby the conditions of pressure and temperature of the reaction are maintained constant. In a preferred embodiment, the cyclohexane vaporizes in part and the vapour is continuously condensed and returned to the reactor.

    Abstract: o -Lactams are prepared by reacting cycloalkyl ketones of formula R-CO-R1 where R and R1 are hydrocarbon groups at least one being a cycloalkyl group, with a nitrosating agent in the presence of boron trifluoride. As by-products carboxylic acid derivatives are formed which may be hydrolysed to the acids. A list of suitable nitrosating reagents is given and nitrosyl chloride is exemplified. It is also possible to use a complex of the nitrosating agent and boron trifluoride. When dicycloalkyl ketones are used caprolactam is formed together with a cycloalkyl carboxylic acid which may then react further with the nitrosating reagent to give more caprolactam. The reaction may be carried out in solution, suitably in a saturated hydrocarbon, and is preferably carried out in the presence of water. The examples describe the preparation of capryl lactam from cyclooctyl methyl ketone, and caprolactam from cyclohexyl methyl ketone, using nitrosylchloride.
