Abstract:
A binary counter (60) provides for resolution doubling by producing a wavetrain (Q0) which represents the zero-order bit of the counter and has the same frequency as the clock input (REFCLOCK).
Abstract:
The invention provides a method for making optically active polymers having a carbon-to-carbon backbone chain and pendant 'transducer' groups having an azo linkage which involves azo-coupling, in homogeneous solution, a carbon-to-carbon backbone polymer having pendant groups terminating in an aromatic group with an aromatic diazonium salt, and recovering the resultant reaction product.
Abstract:
A fluid bearing damper (32) for damping radial motion of a bearing (16) includes a plurality of concentric, circular, thin shims (34, 36) located in an annular damping chamber (22) to present thin, radially stacked damping cavities (46). A portion (36) of the shims have protruding radial lands (42, 44) that partially define the cavities (46), carry radial loads through the damper (32) and produce a controlled mechanical centering force as well as serving to ensure replenishment of fluid film cavities (46).
Abstract:
An exhaust gas driven turbocharger includes a housing (12), and a shaft (32) rotatably supporting a compressor wheel (38) and a turbine wheel (30) for rotation within the housing. A cartridge ball bearing assembly (42) supports the shaft for rotation relative to the housing and includes a bearing outer ring (58), a bearing inner ring (66), and roller bearing elements (62) supporting the inner ring for rotation relative to the outer ring. The inner ring is mounted on the shaft by axially spaced faying surfaces (68), the length of which are controlled to minimize heat transfer from the shaft (32) to the bearing assembly (42) while assuring the necessary stiffness of the assembly.
Abstract:
The positioning ring (44) for a hydraulically operated warning device (80) may be utilized for any hydraulically movable piston or sleeve (52) which, when properly assembled, causes a warning device (80) to effect an initial mode of response. The positioning ring (44) has a reduced inner diameter portion (41) separated from an enlarged inner diameter portion (43) by way of a radial shoulder (42). The enlarged inner diameter portion (43) abuts a shoulder (17) of a surrounding housing (11) and the radial shoulder (42) abuts a shoulder (59) of the piston or sleeve (52). The housing (11) may contain a warning device (80) which engages the piston or sleeve (52) such that if the piston or sleeve (52) is displaced in an axial direction the warning device (80) is operated. Should the centering ring (44) be misassembled or not included in the assembly, either the misassembled positioning ring (44) or the lack of the positioning ring (44) permits the piston or sleeve (52) to be moved to a position where the warning device (80) is operated to provide an indication that the positioning ring (44) is either misassembled or missing from the assembly.
Abstract:
A process of forming block and/or graft copolymers of a polyester and a polyphenylene oxide which comprises heating a mixture of the polyester and the polyphenylene oxide in the presence of a phosphite compound.
Abstract:
The combination diaphragm and valve body comprises a plastic vacuum booster valve body (32) which has molded integrally therewith via living hinges (34) a plurality of diaphragm arms (36). The diaphragm arms (36) may be disposed initially in a position substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis (A) of said valve body (32). The diaphragm arms (36) are pivoted to a position substantially orthogonal relative to the longitudinal axis (A) of the valve body (32) and ultrasonically welded to the valve body (32). Each of said diaphragm arms (36) includes a plurality of radial openings (38) at a radial end (39) thereof for receiving a metal connection member (40). The metal connection member (40) is snap-fitted into associated radial openings (38) in the diaphragm arms (36), and a diaphragm (50) is compression molded about the valve body (32) and over the surface of the diaphragm arms (36). The diaphragm arms (36) may be manufactured separately and then welded to the valve body (32).
Abstract:
Ballistic resistant article comprised of a substrate selected from the group consisting of hard rigid layers and layers comprising a network of high-strength filaments in a matrix and at least one ballistic resistant ceramic body on the surface of the substrate, having at least one girdle encircling the body about an axis thereof said girdle comprised of said filaments.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a polyolefin using a catalyst system of an ingredient (A) and ingredient (B), with ingredient A being obtained through successive reaction steps. Ingredient A is prepared by forming a mixture of (1) the combination of (a) metallic magnesium or an oxygen-containing organic compound of magnesium with (b) a mixture of a monohydroxylated organic compound and a polyhydroxylated organic compound, and (2) oxygen-containing organic compounds of titanium. The resulting solution is reacted in sequence with (3) at least one first halogenated aluminum compound, (4) at least one silicon compound and (5) at least one second halogenated aluminum compound. Compounds 3 and 5 are added at temperatures not exceeding about 25 °C. Ingredient B is an organometallic compound of metals from Group Ia, IIa, IIIa or IVa of the Periodic Table. The resulting free-flowing polyolefin is characterized by a large average particle size and small amount of fine particles.
