Abstract: The present disclosure provides pre-treatment compositions and related methods. As such, a pre-treatment coating composition can include an evaporable liquid vehicle and a pre-treatment coating matrix. The pre-treatment coating matrix can include from 5 wt % to 40 wt % multivalent metal salt, and from 5 wt % to 20 wt % coalescent latex binder comprising styrene-butadiene rubber, polyurethane, or mixture thereof. The composition can further include from 30 wt % to 80 wt % high Tg latex having a Tg greater than 80° C., from 0.5 wt % to 20 wt % water soluble binder, and from 3 wt % to 20 wt % wax having a melting point greater than 120° C. The weight percentages of the pre-treatment coating matrix exclude the evaporable liquid vehicle content.

Abstract: The present invention relates to tackifier compounds and methods of using the same. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a tackifier compound including independently substituted or unsubstituted fused rings A and B each independently chosen from (C5-C10)cycloalkyl and (C2-C10)heterocyclyl. Fused ring A is substituted with (R1)1-8 and fused ring B is substituted with —(OC(O)R′C(O)R2)1-8. At each occurrence R′ is independently chosen from (C2-C10)alkanylene, (C2-C10)alkenylene, (C2-C10)alkynylene, C5-C20(arylene), and (C1-C20)heteroarylene, wherein R′ is unsubstituted or substituted. At each occurrence R1 is independently selected from —OH, —OR3, and —OC(O)R′C(O)R2. At each occurrence R2 is independently chosen from —OH, —OR3, —NH2, —NHR3, and —NR32. At each occurrence R3 is independently chosen from (C1-C10)alkanyl, (C2-C10)alkenyl, (C2-C10)alkynyl, C5-C20(aryl), and (C1-C20)heteroaryl, wherein R3 is unsubstituted or substituted.

Also described are cold sealable coated polymer films coated with the aqueous cold seal adhesive and a method for producing a cold-sealed pack by applying the aqueous cold seal adhesive to a packaging substrate.

Abstract: Water dispersible polyamides having carboxylic acid groups are disclosed. These are made by reacting polycarboxyl is acids or anhydrides thereof with amine containing monomer or an amide terminated polyamide under reaction conditions such that a few of the carboxylic acid groups are residual and can promote dispersion in water. These polyamides after dispersion can be chain extended to higher molecular weight polymers or can be terminally functionalized with reactive groups such as isocyanate, epoxy, vinyl, acetoacetonate, or silanol groups. Composites and hybrids of these polyamides with vinyl polymers are also disclosed and claimed.

Abstract: Finely divided, cationic, aqueous polymer dispersions, method for the production thereof, and the use thereof The present invention relates to a finely divided, cationic, aqueous polymer dispersion which is obtainable by emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in a continuous phase containing an aqueous liquid in which the emulsion polymerisation is carried out, in the presence of polymerisation initiators, of a combination of monomers comprising (a) from 0 to less than 60% by weight of at least one optionally substituted styrene, (b) from greater than 0 to 80% of at least one C1-C12-alkyl acrylate and/or at least one C1-C12-alkyl methacrylate, (c) from 0 to 10% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising at least one acid group, (d) from 5 to 20% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising a cationic group, and (e) from 0 to 50% by weight of at least one non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer differing from (a), (b), (c), and (d), the sum of (a)+(b)+(c)+(d)+(e) being 100% by weight, and the aqueous liquid contains from 0 to 4% by weight based on the weight of the combination of monomers of at least one emulsifier, in which the emulsion polymerisation is carried out optionally in the presence of at least one terpene containing compound. Also claimed is a process or preparing the finely divided, cationic, aqueous polymer dispersion and the use of the finely divided, cationic, aqueous polymer dispersion for sizing paper, board and cardboard.
