The disclosure provides a functionalized polymer for use in coating compositions and a method for making the functionalized polymer. In some embodiments, the functionalized polymer is a water-dispersible polymer, more preferably a water-dispersible polyester polymer, having one or more side groups including one or more salt groups. Packaging containers (e.g., food or beverage cans) comprising the functionalized polymer and methods of making such containers are also provided.

There is provided a cured-film formation composition that forms a cured film having excellent photoreaction efficiency and solvent resistance, and high adhesion, an orientation material for photo-alignment, and a retardation material formed with the orientation material. The cured-film formation composition comprises a component (A) that is a compound having a photo-aligning group and one substituent selected from a hydroxy group, a carboxy group, and an amino group; a component (B) that is a hydrophilic polymer having one or more substituents selected from a hydroxy group, a carboxy group, and an amino group; and a component (C) that is a cross-linking agent that reacts with the component (A) and the component (B) and reacts at a temperature lower than a sublimation temperature of the component (A), wherein when the component (B) is an acrylic polymer, the cured-film formation composition further comprises a component (E) that is an adhesion enhancing component. The cross-linking agent of the component (C) may be more hydrophilic than the component (A). The orientation material is formed by forming a cured film with the cured-film formation composition and utilizing photo-alignment technique. The retardation material is obtained by applying a polymerizable liquid crystal on the orientation material and curing it.

The invention relates to a method for hotmelt application of a thermosetting formulation, which comprises a binder composition containing a resin and a crosslinker that form volatile compounds upon reaction with each other whereby the thermosetting formulation is converted into a hotmelt and stored in a hotmelt unit, wherein the release of a substantial amount of volatile component from the hotmelt unit is prevented during the storage of the hotmelt in the hotmelt unit. The invention also relates to the use in a hotmelt of a binder composition comprising a resin and a crosslinker, that form volatile components upon reaction.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a heat curable paint binder composition containing a compound comprising hydroxyl amide groups. In a first step a compound comprising hydroxyalkyl amide units and carboxylic acid units is obtained by reacting a cyclic anhydride and an alkanolamine in a mixing device and in a second step the binder composition is obtained by mixing the compound and a polymer in a second mixing device.

A resinous composition for coating use which is excellent in weather resistance and in low temperature curing properties, comprising a resin having a resinous acid value based on carboxyl groups derived from its constituting tetrachlorophalic acid of 2 to 8, a resinous acid value based on sulfonic acid groups derived from its constituting sulfophthalic acid of 0.5 to 5, and a functional group capable of reacting with a crosslinking agent to be compounded with the resin. The present resin is useful, in the combination form with a crosslinking agent, as a resinous vehicle of a coating composition which is excellent in curing properties, whether resistance, pigment dispersibility and storage stability and is specifically useful as an intermediate or top coat paint for automobile bodies or the like.
