    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process which efficiently produces an ester of nitrous acid with the use of a nitrogen oxide without employing a salt of nitrous acid.
    SOLUTION: A nitrogen oxide (particularly, a nitrogen oxide containing at least N
    2 O
    3 ) is reacted with an alcohol at a reaction temperature of lower than 10°C (for example, about -30 to 3°C). According to such a method, even with the use of a secondary alcohol or a tertiary alcohol, the corresponding ester of nitrous acid is obtained in a high yield (for example, a yield of not less than 80 mol% on a nitrogen oxide basis).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce a nitrous acid ester from nitrogen oxide and an alcohol while heightening the yield of the nitrous acid ester (especially while effectively reusing by-produced nitric acid).
    SOLUTION: The method for producing the nitrous acid ester comprises reacting the nitrogen monoxide and oxygen with the alcohol while feeding the alcohol to an upper part region of a reaction column to allow it to flow down from the upper part region to a lower part region, and while feeding the nitrogen monoxide and the oxygen, or a mixed gas thereof to the lower part region. (1) The bottom liquid comprising the nitric acid and the alcohol is extracted from the bottom of the reaction column, and the extracted bottom liquid is introduced to a reactor. The nitrogen monoxide is fed to the reactor to bring the bottom liquid into contact with the nitrogen monoxide in the reactor to form the nitrous acid ester. (2) The obtained nitrous acid ester is fed to the reaction column.
