Abstract:
Resin compositions are prepared by reacting an epoxy resin with an amine-substituted aromatic sulfonic acid amide at a temperature up to 130oC. The resultant product can be cured by heating to a temperature of at least 150oC in the presence of suitable curing agents and in some instances in the absence of any curing agent.
Abstract:
It has now been found that certain phosphonate derivatives of bis(aminoalkyl)piperazines are good threshold agents to prevent metal ion precipitation in aqueous solutions. They also function as sequestering and/or chelating agents as do those which do not contain the phosphonate group. These compounds which have at least one of the amine hydrogens phosphonomethylated are employed as cement set retarding additives.
Abstract:
Low density compositions containing colloidal-size particulates of an ELM absorber such as Fe3O4 and a particulate of an ELM attenuator such as carbonyl iron dispersed in a dielectric matrix such as a styrene/butyl acrylate copolymer provide improved absorption of electromagnetic radiations.

Abstract:
According to the present invention, there are produced rubber-modified monovinylidene aromatic polymers having three different types of rubber particles. The first is a small emulsion particle. The second is a large emulsion particle, preferably an agglomerate. The third is a large mass particle. Compositions according to the present invention exhibit good combinations of toughness and gloss as well as surprising environmental stress crack resistance.
Abstract:
A process for the preparation of an aromatic cyanate which comprises (a) preparing in situ a cyanogen chloride by contacting a solution of chlorine in a chlorinated hydrocarbon with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal cyanide at a temperature of 0oC or below under conditions such that a cyanogen chloride is prepared; and (b) contacting the cyanogen chloride dissolved in the chlorinated hydrocarbon with a hydroxy-substituted aromatic compound dissolved in a chlorinated hydrocarbon, a secondary alcohol or a tertiary alcohol, in the presence of a tertiary amine at a temperature of about 0oC or less under conditions such that a polyaromatic cyanate is prepared characterized by in step (a) physically separating the chlorinated hydrocarbon in which the cyanogen chloride is dissolved from the aqueous layer in which an alkali metal chloride salt is dissolved.
Abstract:
Polymer concrete compositions are made from norbornyl modified unsaturated polyesteramide compositions. The curable concrete composition contains 2 to 20 percent by weight of the polyesteramide composition and 98 to 80 percent by weight of an aggregate such as sand, gravel, silica flour, etc. The polyesteramide composition contains norbornyl modified polyesteramide, ethylenically unsaturated monomers, such as styrene with or without a vinyl reactive additive. The polyesteramide can be further modified to contain a copolymerized polyether polyol having a functionality of three or more, a copolymerized poly (2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) or a copolymerized carboxylated rubber. The vinyl reactive additive can be a vinyl ester resin or a vinyl terminated urethane oligomer. When cured, the curable concrete composition gives a polymer concrete with better tensile and compressive strength with the advantage that the composition cures under water and in the presence of moisture.

A hot melt adhesive and coating composition comprising a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, said copolymer characterized as having a melt flow of at least 0.97 and an acrylic acid or methacrylic acid content such that the copolymer has an acid number ranging from 8 to 93.
Abstract:
Certain methylenephosphonic acid derivatives of aminohydrocarbylpiperazine-urea adducts have been found to be good cement set-retarding additives.
Abstract:
Extrusion-cast films of high molecular weight, linear low density ethylene copolymers which inherently have high block and low slip characteristics are compounded with a minor amount of a secondary fatty acid amide and a finely-divided natural inorganic, e.g., silica, before being extrusion-cast as a thin film, the additives serving to substantially reduce the block and increase the slip characteristics of the film.
Abstract:
Process for reacting at an elevated temperature (a) an epoxy resin or a thioepoxide bearing an average of more than one vicinal epoxide or thioepoxide group per molecule with (b) a polyhydric phenol, a polyhydric thiophenol, a carboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid anhydride. The invention is characterized by conducting the reaction in the presence of sufficient quantity of (c) a trihydrocarbyl phosphine or quaternary phosphonium cation which bear on the average per molecule more than one moiety corresponding to formula (I), wherein Z is -O- or -S-, R3 at each occurence is independently a moiety essentially inert in this process, and w is an integer from 0 to 4, so as to promote the reaction of (a) with (b) and (c). These phosphorous compounds are not readily extractable from the resulting resins.
