Abstract:
The present disclosure provides an optical sensing device that comprises a plurality of optical light guide portions. Each optical light guide portion has a sensing region for sensing a property. The device further comprises a support for supporting the optical light guide portions and for positioning the optical light guide portions in a manner such that at least two sensing regions have a different radial positions around a portion of the support such that the optical device is arranged to sense a property at the different radial positions.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a user terminal for wireless communication with a remote access point, the user terminal comprising: a mapping module adapted to map one or more input data bits to an uplink symbol; a delay module adapted to apply a delay to the uplink symbol; a transmit module adapted to modulate the delayed symbol into a frequency channel; and a directional antenna oriented along a dominant path to the access point, the antenna being adapted to transmit the modulated symbol to the access point, wherein the delay is chosen such that the transmitted symbol arrives at the access point simultaneously with a further symbol modulated into the frequency channel and transmitted by a further user terminal.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for the production of charcoal from wood chips or other particulate organic waste material. The quality of charcoal produced is suitable for use in applications such as chemical reagents, fuels, and as absorbents. The reaction vessel defines a flow path extending from the input to the vessel, through to the output from the vessel, in which the thermal decomposition of the organic material progresses as the organic material passes through the reaction vessel. The vessel includes a reaction zone for autogenous reaction of organic material in a reaction bed of the organic material, and a cooling zone having at least one inlet for supplying cooling gas into the reaction bed and an outlet to extract heated gas from the reaction bed.
Abstract:
A computer-implemented system for the retrieval and manipulation of information available via, an information network includes an information retrieval and processing component. The information retrieval and processing component includes: (a) search query means for conducting a search of the information network to obtain references to the information relevant to a search query; (b) information retrieval means for retrieving information available from sources on the information network, and an information store, for storage of retrieved information; and (c) processing means for processing of information retrieved from sources on the information network, and of information stored in the information store, to produce corresponding processed information. The system includes a cell-based user interface, and an intermediate storage layer, which permits a user, who may be unfamiliar with sophisticated computer programming languages, to develop automated processes for information transfer and manipulation based on present and historical information available via the information network.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of organic boronic acid derivatives involving the reaction of an organic compound with diboronic acid in the presence of a Group 8-11 metal catalyst.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an isolated DNA molecule encoding Malathion Carboxylesterase capable of hydrolysing at least one organophosphate selected from the group consisting of carboxylester organophosphates and dimethylol organophosphates. The DNA molecule comprises a nucleotide sequence having at least 60%, preferably at least 80% and more preferably at least 95% homology with LcnullE 7, in which the protein encoded by the DNA molecule differs from E 3 at least in the substitution of Trip at position 251 with an amino acid selected from the group consisting of Leu, Ser, Ala, Ile, Val, Thr, Cys, Met and Gly. The preferred substituents are Leu and Ser.
Abstract:
This invention describes a process for covalently coupling organic compounds which comprises reacting an olefinic compound having a halogen or halogen-like substituent at a coupling position with a diboron derivative in the presence of a Group VIII metal catalyst and a suitable base. The invention also describes a process for preparing alkene borate intermediates comprising reacting an olefinic compound having a halogen or halogen-like substituent with a diboron derivative in the presence of a Group VIII metal catalyst and a suitable base.
Abstract:
A material and method for removal of environmental oxyanions (and especially phosphates), the material comprising a substrate such as a clay modified with complexing elements selected from Group IIIB, Group IVB, and lanthanide elements (or a mixture of such elements). The resultant modified substrate can bind oxyanions and make them unavailable for utilisation in the environment; in the case of phosphates, by algae and the like. The method includes forming a capping of material at the sediment/water interface, applying the material in the form of pellets at the sediment/water interface, or injecting the pellets into the sediment.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to methods for producing isothiocyanate containing products from Brassicaceae material and lactic acid bacteria for use in such methods. The present invention also relates to isothiocyanate containing products from Brassicaceae material produced by such methods.
