    Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer program products for detecting lightning strikes (52). A detection system (44) receives lightning data from a lightning measurement system (17) associated with a wind turbine (10) indicative of an occurrence of a lightning strike (52) at the wind turbine (10). The lightning data received from the lightning measurement system (17) is compared to lightning data received from a lightning geolocation system (42). Criteria such as the location and time of occurrence of the lightning strike (52) identified by each set of lightning data is compared to determine if the wind turbine (10) was struck by lightning (52), and if so, whether and what type of alert to issue.

    Abstract: In a first aspect of the invention there is provided a method of forming a leading edge protection shield on a wind turbine blade shell. The method comprises providing at least a portion of a wind turbine blade shell comprising a windward surface, a leeward surface, and a leading edge, providing a leading edge mould comprising a concave curved mould surface and arranging the mould over the leading edge of the blade shell such that a generally C-shaped cavity is defined between the blade shell and the mould surface. The method further comprises clamping the mould to the windward surface and/or to the leeward surface of the blade shell using a clamping arrangement spaced from the leading edge in a chordwise direction. The method further comprises providing an edge sealing arrangement positioned between the leading edge and the clamping arrangement in the chordwise direction, and forming a seal between the mould surface and the windward and leeward surfaces of the blade shell using the edge sealing arrangement to define windward and leeward edges of the C-shaped cavity. The mould surface is substantially tangential to the windward and leeward surfaces at the windward and leeward edges such that the C-shaped cavity tapers in thickness towards the windward and leeward edges of the C-shaped cavity. The method further comprises supplying polymer to the C-shaped cavity to form a leading edge protection shield on the blade shell.

    Abstract: Control of a Tool Mounted on a Robotic Arm A method of controlling the position of a tool mounted on a robotic arm comprising projecting an image onto the workpiece from a projector mounted on the tool or robotic arm. The image is detected using a camera mounted on the tool or robotic arm. The image is used to determine a relative position of the tool with respect to a workpiece and the relative position is provided as an input to a controller which is configured to compare the relative position to a predetermined value. If the relative position is not equal to the predetermined value, a control signal is issued to a position controller to move the tool to a new position in which the relative position of the tool is closer to the predetermined value. Or, if the relative position is equal to the predetermined value, a control signal is issued to the position controller to maintain the tool in its current position.

    Abstract: A support structure, such as a monopile, for a wind turbine, comprising a tubular body having a wall extending about a body axis, the wall defining a leading edge and an outer circumferential surface extending away from the leading edge and a plurality of fins supported on the wall near to the leading edge of the tubular body and extending in an axial direction. Each fin comprises a first fin portion that extends from the wall in a radial outwards direction with respect to the body axis and a second fin portion that extends from the wall in a radial inwards direction with respect to the body axis. Beneficially the arrangement of fins on the head of the support structure provides structural reinforcement to the pile wall so the pile is less likely to buckle during installation. Having fin portions that extend radially inwards and outwards from the pile wall means that the pile wall is supported evenly. The fins may also be provided with a fluid delivery system which is configured to inject fluid at pressure to tip regions of the fins. Such a configuration helps the monopile to penetrate the soil into which is being driven and therefore can reduce the required pile driving force.

    Abstract: A method of making a wind turbine blade shear web. The method comprises providing a shear web mould. The shear web mould has a longitudinally-extending main surface shaped to form a main panel of the shear web, and first and second longitudinally extending side surfaces shaped to form respective first and second flange portions of the shear web.     Abstract: A method for determining radial play of a bearing arrangement in a wind turbine component, the bearing arrangement comprising a first component and a second component, which are movable relative to one another in a radial direction. The method comprises: capturing a first image of the bearing arrangement, the first image including the first and second components in a first relative position; applying a radially-directed load to the bearing arrangement to move the first component radially with respect to the second component by a distance that defines the radial play of the bearing arrangement so that the first and second components are in a second relative position; capturing a second image of the bearing arrangement, the second image including the first and second components in the second relative position; and comparing the first and second images to quantify the difference between the first relative position of the first and second components and the second relative position of the first and second components, thereby to determine the radial play in the bearing arrangement.
