    Abstract: The hinge comprises a compression spring for balancing the weight of leaves which are hinged on a horizontal axis, such as covers, flaps or the like, particularly in refrigerating chests. One end of the compression spring bears under initial stress on the stationary hinge member. The other end of the spring bears by means of the end of a spring-guiding rod, which supports the spring, on the second hinge member, which is secured to the leaf. The lower end of the spring-guiding rod bears by means of a rocker on a knife edge bearing provided on the stationary hinge member. The guiding rod is provided with coarse pitch screw threads at its end opposite to the slider. The rocker carries a nut which has coarse pitch screw threads and is in threaded engagement with the lower end of the guiding rod.

A spring-loaded hinge, e.g. for the lid of a freezer cabinet, which urges the lid towards both the open and closed positions, comprises a pivot pin 8 about which the lid 7 carrying a built-in U-shaped housing 11 can rotate, each limb of the housing is apertured to receive the pivot pin, one aperture 14 being elongated to facilitate assembly. A two-armed cam member 18 is fixed to the pivot pin, the arms being parallel and having two cam surfaces 19 and 20 separated by an edge 21. A cam follower in the form of rollers 24 and 25 attached to an arm pivotable about a point 22 are urged into engagement with one or the other of the cam surfaces by the compressed coil spring 28 which bears on the reciprocating guide bar 27. In the closed position (Fig. 1, not shown), the cam follower bears against the cam surface 19 and urges the lid to the closed position. On opening the lid, the cam follower moves over the edge 21 on to cam surface 20 and urges the lid towards the open position. In the modification of Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the cam followers are not en a pivoted arm, but are contained in arcuate tracks in the guide bar 27, along which they may move as the lid position is varied.

The lid 7 of a freezer cabinet 1 is pivoted albout a horizontal axis, the pivot pin 51 being non-rotatively carried by a strut 50 attached to cabinet 1 and inserted in and co-operating with means carried in the lid for counterbalancing the weight of the lid but also providing a closing force for the lid when closed. Link 54 is held non-rotative by engagement with retaining faces 52, 53 on pin 51, further links 56, 58 are pivoted to link 54 and to lid 7 at 55, 57 respectively, and are pivoted to each other and to a spring loaded bar 63 at 59, the spring loading keeping one of cam surfaces 71, 61, 60 on link 56 in contact with cam follower 70 carried by pin 57, and link 58 being provided with a slot 62 for the necessary sliding motion of link 58 with respect to pin 59 during operation. When the lid is closed, as shown, cam follower 70 is in contact with surface 71 of link 56 and the action of spring 64 is to apply a closing force to the lid, but as lid 7 is opened cam follower 70 rides onto surface 60 and spring 64 acts to counterbalance the weight of lid 7.
