Abstract: Improved fabricated adhesive microstructures and methods of fabricating adhesive microstructures incorporating deformable materials are provided. We have found that the fabricated adhesive microstructures exhibit significantly improved adhesion strengths at least at smooth surfaces such as glass, as compared to known fabricated adhesive microstructures. Advantageously, we have found that the adhesion strengths of fabricated microstructures of the invention for a range of smooth glass contact surfaces may be in the range of between about 125kPa and 220kPa in air at one atmosphere pressure and in the range of between about 25kPa and 12OkPa in vacuum. Conveniently, synthetic elastomers are used in the invention. A method (55) (steps 1. to 5.) of fabricating new adhesive microstructures (75) having multiple levels of compliance with a surface has been proposed. Methods of fabricating new double-sided adhesive microstructures via moulding have further been proposed.

Abstract: A bulk dielectric material comprises a solid composite material comprising a solid matrix material and a plurality of filler elements distributed within the matrix material. The bulk dielectric material has, at a frequency greater than 1 MHz, (i) a permittivity having a real part of magnitude greater than 10 and an imaginary part of magnitude less than 3, and (ii) an electrical breakdown strength greater than 5 kV/mm and has a minimum dimension greater than 2 mm.

Abstract: A detector for detecting ionising radiation comprises a scintillator (10) selected to emit light in response to incidence thereon of radiation to be detected, at least one detector (16) for detecting said emitted light, and at least one optical waveguide (12) for transmitting said emitted light to said detector (16). The optical waveguide typically comprises a flexible solid or hollow fibre that can be incorporated into a flexible mat or into a fibre-reinforced structure, so that the detector is integrated therewith.
