Explosives.-Relates to explosives containing nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine, nitrostarch, nitromannite, or other nitric ester, and consists in improving their stability by the addition of ureas in which one, two, or three atoms of hydrogen are placed by aromatic radicles. In an example, the explosive contains 30 per cent of nitroglycerine, 65 per cent of guncotton, and ethyl-phenyl-urea.

Abstract: 12,743. Nathan, Sir F. L., Rintoul, W., and Baker, F. May 30. Esters of substituted carbamic acids containing one or more aromatic radicles, are prepared in any of the three following ways:-(1) by the action of primary or secondary amines on esters of chlorformic acid; thus, ethyl chlorformic ester and aniline yield phenyl urethane; (2) by the action of alkali salts of phenol on urea chlorides ; thus, sodium phenate in alcoholic solution and diphenylureachloride also in alcoholic solution yield the phenyl ester of diphenylcarbamic acid; or (3) by the action of alcohols or phenols on aromatic isocyanates; thus, phenol and phenyl isocyanate, when heated with a small quantity of aluminium chloride, yield the phenyl ester of carbamic acid.
