Abstract:
A surgical sagittal saw with an indexing head. The saw actuates a blade assembly that includes a bar from which a blade head extends. An oscillating head extends upwardly from the saw head. The oscillating head, in addition is mounted to the saw head to be able to rotate around its longitudinal axis and so that it can move along the saw head. A biasing spring normally holds the oscillating head in a fixed position. When the oscillating head is in the fixed position, the oscillating head holds the blade assembly against a restraining bracket integral with the saw head. Manual force is used to overcome the biasing spring to allow replacement and removal of the blade assembly.
Abstract:
A surgical tool arrangement including a powered handpiece which cooperates with a combined electrosurgical and mechanical cutting instrument. The electrosurgical and mechanical cutting instrument includes an outer static housing element which defines an electrode for delivering electrical energy to the surgical site, and a cutting element disposed within the outer housing and movable relative thereto for manipulating patient tissue. The electrosurgical and mechanical cutting instrument is an integral component attachable to the surgical tool to provide multiple functions in a single instrument, such as cauterization, ablation and mechanical cutting, without the need for attachment of additional housing structures or other adapters. The tool arrangement also includes a universal handpiece which is capable of accepting and operating a number of different surgical instruments, each having one or multiple functions.
Abstract:
A fluid delivery system comprising a reservoir for storing fluid to be delivered to the patient and a fluid discharge device for delivering the fluid from the reservoir to the patient. An input device is in electronic communication with a controller and configured for setting at least one operating parameter of the system. The controller operates the fluid discharge device based on the at least one operating parameter and locks the system after the at least one operating parameter is set such that the at least one operating parameter is unable to be modified. A display is in electronic communication with the controller to at least periodically display a code for resetting the at least one operating parameter. The code is altered at least once during use. The controller is further configured to unlock the system upon receiving the code thereby allowing a user to reset the operating parameter.
Abstract:
A personal protection system for providing a sterile barrier around medical/surgical personnel. The system includes a head unit over which a hood or a toga suspended. Internal to the head unit is a ventilation fan, a light for illuminating the surgical field and communications system for communicating with others. The head unit includes a head band. The ventilation fan is adjustably mounted to the head band so it can be positioned at a location to minimize the strain imposed on the wearer.
Abstract:
An operating room system that enables real time control between applications connected to a backbone within the operating room so that these devices can effectively communicate and interact in real time.
Abstract:
A porous beta -tricalcium phosphate material for bone implantation is provided. The multiple pores in the porous TCP body are separate discrete voids and are not interconnected. The pore size diameter is in the range of 20-500 µm, preferably 50-125 µm. The porous beta -TCP material provides a carrier matrix for bioactive agents and can form a moldable putty composition upon the addition of a binder. Preferably, the bioactive agent is encapsulated in a biodegradable agent. The invention provides a kit and an implant device comprising the porous beta -TCP, and a bioactive agent and a binder. The invention also provides an implementable prosthetic device comprising a prosthetic implant having a surface region, a porous beta -TCP material disposed on the surface region optionally comprising at least a bioactive agent or a binder. Methods of producing the porous beta -TCP material and including bone formation are also provided.
Abstract:
The invention provides modified proteins and DNAs of the TGF- beta superfamily including modified morphogenic proteins. The proteins of the present invention display altered biological or biochemical attributes. Specifically, the modified proteins are designed through manipulation of exchange of subdomains among two or more members of the superfamily such that certain desired attributes are mixed-and-matched and then exploited therapeutically.
Abstract:
A wire driver for driving a wire or pin into living tissue. A plural bar linkage such as a two bar linkage (742, 754) or a three bar linkage (762, 772, 776) that includes a lever (232, 232, 564, 606, 742, 762) is actuated to drive components that selectively grasp the wire from a release state to a grasping state. The components are a collet (502) comprising several feet (512), and a wedge (486) disposed around the collet and moving from a release position to a grasping position for urging the feet to grasp the wire or pin.
Abstract:
An end effector of a surgical robotic manipulator includes a removeable cutting accessory. The cutting accessory includes a cutting tip and a shaft extending along an axis. A drive member is configured to rotatably drive the shaft of the cutting accessory. An actuator is coupled to the drive member for rotatably driving the drive member. A clutch assembly is supported by and is selectively rotatable relative to the drive member and receives the shaft of the cutting accessory along the axis of the shaft for selectively locking the shaft to the drive member.
Abstract:
A prosthetic implant 12 useful in a cementless application is disclosed. The implant may include a curved bone facing surface 24 and one or more pegs or keels 26, 28. Preferably, the implant 12 is implanted on a bone surface 18 that has been prepared so as to allow for a snap fit between the implant 12 and the bone.
