    Abstract: A disc drive 22 having a head 26 actuated by an actuator 32 for seeking out a destination track 30 includes servo velocity control circuitry 51 and servo position control circuitry 41. The servo velocity control circuitry 51 seeks out the destination track and places the head within the boundaries of that track while the servo position control circuitry 41 using servo information places the head on the centerline of the destination track. The fine servo control circuitry 20 is provided for communicating the information generated by the servo position control circuitry 41 to the servo velocity circuitry 51 when the head 26 is several tracks from the destination track in order to allow the actuator 32 to smoothly and quickly cause the head to seek within the boundaries of the destination track without overshooting that track.

The drive possesses a handle 70 having a lever which extends into the recess to contact the engaging surface of the disk assembly mounting mechanism, whereby further movement of the handle causes the mounting mechanism to move in such a manner that a disk assembly within the removable cartridge is positioned over a spindle motor of the drive for mounting thereto.     Abstract: A disk cartridge for data storage includes a door assembly which is opened as the disk cartridge is inserted in the disk drive. A rotatable cartridge door rotates between a open position and a closed position by moving a flexible band attached to the cartridge door. An end of the flexible band extends through a slot in the side wall of the disk cartridge such that the end of the flexible band can be caught by a leaf spring hook of the disk drive. The leaf spring hook within the disk drive grasps the end of the flexible band and holds the flexible band stationary in the disk drive as the disk cartridge is inserted. The cartridge door is opened by drawing the flexible band along the side wall of the disk cartridge. The rotatable disk cartridge door according to the present invention requires less vertical space and creates less particulate contamination than known disk cartridge door assemblies.

    Abstract: A disk drive employing a voice coil actuator to position a read/write head over a magnetic disk retracts the read/write head from the magnetic disk surface and passes an audio frequency alternating current through the voice coil to produce a corresponding movement in the read/write head support structure which generates an audible tone indicating the disk drive status. The alternating current waveform has a positive phase and a negative phase, with the read/write head moving toward the disk in response to one phase of the current and the read/write head moving away from the disk in response to the other phase. Audible tones of different frequencies are produced by varying the frequency of the alternating current waveform. In this fashion the disk drive generates a predetermined sequence of tones separated by silent pauses which identifies a particular disk drive status condition.
